We just moved into a new apt. and most of it is carpeted. Our eating area has carpet too. I was once in someone's house and they had a vinyl/linoleum type of area mat on the floor. It was really nice and decorative I just don't know where to buy such a thing. I would like to be able to sweep after a meal, and ideas?

Oh boy, I feel for you.

My SIL has a huge rug underneath her dining room table...thought it'll look decorative and fancy...well, it does during the week , not on shabbos when it's covered with food and crumbs.

My MIL asked me if she should buy me a rug for under the dining room table, when I moved into my apartment, and I politely declined and saved her some cash!

As for the plastic that you can put under the table, here In the US, usually the heimishe hardware stores will sell 'em cut to size. Don't know if you can do that where you are What

how big is the room ... you can lay plywood over it maybe if it's not so big ... they come in 8 x 4 foot rectangles ... or find some cheap linoleum ... and tack at corners over the carpet ... trying to brainstorm ... hard w/o seeing ...

What color is the carpet?
I also have carpet under my table. It's not a big deal. It's commercial carpeting and immediately absorbs any stains. I sweep it with a broom and vaccuum it. If food gets stuck you rub it with a wet rag and it comes off in a second. I got used to having it.

Check out industrial /commercial floor mats, the kind of thing they put in offices under desk chairs. Olefin carpet mats at Staples.
