My son just stole my phone and when I asked him about it (if he knew where it was) he lied to my face.

How old is he? My DD is a major liar, even on things that are obvious. Some kids grow out of it, some don't.

He's almost eight.
He stuffed it in his desk drawer. I looked for it and when I asked him if he saw it, he said no.
I left the room to check elsewhere. He had an opportunity to put it back on top of the desk where I left it when putting him to sleep, but did not. He later said he wanted to use it to call my mil to say goodnight, but figured I wouldn't let. We discussed asking permission regardless, and then he wouldn't get into trouble.
He does this occasionally, but it seems to be escalating, and so is my frustration and anger.
How do you discipline for stealing? I confiscated a few of his favorite toys.
