Any ideas? Looking for something durable- (my dd always gets a hold of the camera) and that will take nice quality pictures.

Panasonic Lumix has very good reviews, especially for quick picture taking of kids. It's currently $160 shipped on Amazon...other places may be cheaper. I know a lot of people happy with it, and it has really good features (like a large optical zoom).

I was going to suggest the same, I just got mine a few weeks ago LOVE IT! so much better then the cannon or Kodac's I've had in the past. B and HY had a lumix 12 MP listed at 99 dollars a few weeks ago, check that out too.

My mother in law just got a great Sony -- tried it out tonight, can take 10 shots in rapid succession, huge zoom -- but her price range might have been higher. I have to see if I can find that model.

ETA: Yeah, looks like it's way out of your price range.

Is the zoom better than the Canon sd elph series? And can you shoot a picture by looking at the screen?

Not sure which of the cameras in that series you're speaking about, since they differ, but most are 4-5x while this is 8x.

What do you mean: shoot by looking at the screen? Do you mean vs viewfinder? Absolutely. I'm not even sure there is a viewfinder.

I hear you. And does it take nice indoor pictures? And how do you compare it to Canon?

I'll let Mommy 3.5 answer these Smile
(She had both.)

I only used the Lumix once (someone else's) and I've heard great things since then.

Why I'm asking is cuz I have a Canon sd 1100. I was pretty happy with it, except for indoor pictures. And last week it fell into the water and stopped working. So I'm looking for something affordable and better.

thanks for the responses! The lumix does get great reviews overall. There are two versions, one is around 150-180 and there is one that is a little cheaper. Does anyone know if the cheaper model is still a good camera? Or am I better off just spending the extra money and getting the more expensive one?

Oh, this one is just $150...your budget...

Were you talking about this? The optical zoom is "only" 4x. Decent, but not huge. Depends how much you use the zoom feature. I love my zoom for school events, etc, and if I was in the market for another camera, I'd rather pay a bit more if it was still in my budget and get the biggest optical zoom I could.

The pictures were awesome, inside, outside, cloudy. sunny. The only thing that is hard is seeing the screen in high sun area, like the beach, but even there I got some really good shots. I would love a viewfinder for sunny situations, but its nearly impossible to get that feature.

(copied and pasted from the 'net)
-Cut a strip of heavier cardboard as "long" as you want it (the width of your lcd screen)
-The length you want is the the top "hangover" + the length of the LCD screen + the bottom "hangover" (where the "hangovers are what provides the shielding from the sun)
-Fold your cardboard to fit over the screen
-LOOSELY tape the open end of the shield so that you can measure for a side screen (the side AWAY from your camera)
-cut a piece of cardboard to fit the "open" end and tape in place

Or you can buy a sunshield...
This is for a 2.7", but there are various sizes depending on your specific camera screen.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/......html This one is 99 dollars. its a great deal. 14 mp, 4x zoom, hd video

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/......html this one is a has some better features and higher MP, its usually 140, but is on sale for 119, so its a really great deal. hd video.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/......html this one is a bit over your price range 155-160, its the one I have it has 8x zoom as opposed to the other 2 that have only 4x zoom, it is also extra sensitive for low light situations. this one also shoots HD

Any one of these cameras would be great, they all are highly rated, its a matter zoom difference between them. and how many scene and color modes. the first has less MP then the other 2. all have more MP's then the average person needs.

Agreed about the MPs.

The last one is on Amazon for $149. Lots of color options

If you live in NY, I'd do brick and mortar and pay a few extra dollars. If not, Amazon does have great customer service...I assume B&H online customer service is also good, but no experience.

Does the Panasonic Lumix take clear, sharp pictures when the flash is off? Thats's something I care a lot about when it comes to cameras.
