The squawking shatters
Our conversation.
His torso lunges forward.
He turns to ask
“Can I take this one Hun?”
Already mapping out his route.
I try to remember to be proud.
Instead,
My mother’s face flashes
Like a T.V. screen before me.
Beautiful blue eyes
Glowering at my father’s rush
To try to save a life
But also
To leave the Table.
The door slams.
My mother sighs.
We shovel in the food
That remains on our plate.
Swallowing the chicken
To force down the lumps.
