I got a new bag/purse that I really like, but I used it once, and there was black dye all over my shirt (by the shoulder)! I have no idea what to do... any ideas?

take it back to the store and ask for a refund. If they don't give you satisfaction, contact the manufacturer.

Question: How can you know ahead which shoes are going to do that, so you can watch out for it ? We've had pairs that ruined all of my dd's white tights.

You can't, although you can try firmly rubbing the leather inside and out a few times with a white cloth. (Oh, sure, I always carry around a white shmatte in my purse just in case I go shopping for leather goods. Right.)
