I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but I would much, much, much rather have severe food poisoning and feel like I'm dying and have to go to the hospital (but of course recover) than eat treif. If it were a question of chas v'shalom dying, I would eat treif. But of course if I were offered the choice of poisoned food and treif, I'd eat nothing. Hope this helps.

Treif chicken, because it's a matter of health, and a serious one. The thought is sickening though.

Why would anyone choose to have treif or food poisoning if she could have "neither"?

I realy had a severe Crying case of food poisoning~

From Empire chicken pot pie ! I had progectional vomiting

all night . In the morning I went to the hospital

and was given IV "S I felt like I was gonna die !

I reported the supermarket where I bought the chicken

I even was on the radio at a local radio station and told my story .

on the air they called the 800 hotline and told them what had happened

Empire was not concerened - I would never buy that brand again !

I am sorry to hear you were sick. However, you must realize that most likely it was not the fault of Empire chicken. There are a number of middleman that deal with the chicken /product from the factory to the supermarket (food broker, distributor, trucker, etc). There are a few dozen possibilities of what could have gone wrong with that particular package. My FIL is a food broker, and if you would hear the stories, you'd want to live on a farm and do all schechting yourself. shock

Some kosher places are repulsive and "you know you'll be sick if you eat there" material.

The same is true of some non-kosher restaurants; so what?

Yes, but the kosher restaurants that make you sick are much more expensive, and supposed to be on a much higher "standard" than the non kosher ones who make you sick.
There IS a hygiene problem in many kosher restaurants.

When I was in high school I used to take food orders and wait tables at a kosher restaurant (could you call it that?!) in NY. The cook was an illegal mexican and made so little money he couldnt even afford to take a day off when he was sick. I remember once coming in and seeing him sick as a dog cooking the food, he had a fever, his eyes were watery, he was coughing up a storm, IT WAS DISCUSTING! Puke

The people I know who eat in both restaurants say you have to "look for it" with treif restaurants (go to horrible looking, ill smelling ones) to be really sick, but it can happen in nice kosher ones...
