What are some of the most important things you've learned as a teacher?
Mine include:
Make the material accessible to the lowest common denominator, but hold the highest of expectations.
Try to say "don't" and "no" as little as possible when it comes to discipline ("Please sit down" as opposed to "don't stand up).
Remember that you are on the same team as your students, and when they act out, you are there to help them learn how to control themselves.
Always show them what is going to happen, whether it's with pictures and symbols for young children, or with a written list on the board for older ones.
Take the time in the beginning of the year to set the stage, and let them take ownership of the rules.
I probably have more, but I'll wait to see what all of you might add.

Always have the room extremely organized and labeled - that way, they'll be able to find and do everything they need to do with minimal assistance.
Cover the walls with information that they have learned - that way they can access the info. freely.
If they ask a question you don't know, say you don't know and research the answer together.
Have the highest of expectations of all of your students.
Tie in everything to their lives and interests - they'll be that more engaged.

Let your students do most of the talking! (about the suject on hand ofcourse)
I find that when I start talking and I feel speech mode coming on... my students are tuning out!
