Surely you are not belittling the statement in the Rambam, though it sounds like you are. How do you understand it? What sort of people do you think it applies to? Only materialistic people who enjoy the lowest of physical pleasures (men-meat and wine, women-clothes and jewelry, and children - sweets)?

Should women (and men) feel demeaned by it? For that is the feeling I am getting from your post. Perhaps you will clarify this for us.

I don't find them necessary to my happiness.

It adds simchas yom tov to receive new garments/jewelery yet one could be just as happy finding pleasures from other items.

so why does the Rambam write what he wrote as he wrote it? why do you think he didn't say, "Yom Tov is a time for simcha. To each his/her own"?
And why did chen's rav say it was praiseworthy to buy clothes for yomtov?

I think "clothing" had a different meaning and importance in the past. People usually just had one or two outfits which they wore day after day. So a new outfit was a real refreshing treat.

Someone who works in the fabric business told me that as recently as forty or fifty years ago (before all the factories were moved to third-world countries) clothing was MUCH more expensive and a bigger deal than it is now.

There are lots of things that change with the times depending on what is standard. For example I don't think it will be hard for anyone to find a Rov who tells them that they may shower during the nine days.

Of COURSE I bought new clothing and got new jewelry! You can't properly celebrate the holiday without it. You might as well eat chometz if you don't do this important mitzvah.

Scratching Head What

some people can't afford to get new clothing and new jewelry. The truth is you can get costume jewelry that looks good but still. "You might as well eat chometz" ???

This year I'm getting new hose. It's my third year doing Pesach and I find the budget has gotten eaten up (and more so) already without me adding to it.

Phew. Well it's hard enough to tell people when they're having dry humor when you can hear them, it's much harder when it's just text and no emoticons to give you any hints as to their seriousness...

Okay I feel better now!

Defy was being tongue in check.

But is IS a din that the husband buy new clothing and jewelry for yomtov for the wife; just like we prepare meat and have wine for the men on yomtov. Within our means, of course.

BasHinda, you'll work something out IYH - maybe you need a robe or something else now, and for Tishrei you'll see what you need. If you're buying, it might as well be lekovod yomtov.

Everyone calm down! I'm being sarcastic! I didn't buy any jewelry!

I did buy a great wraparound dress for yom tov from Target (I got distracted while buying cleaning supplies). You guys should really check out Target's selection - I've found some great shabbos clothing their recently.
