As a teen/young adult I always thought that I would raise my kids to be super kind and NEVER say any of these cringey things to nonjews/secular jews/ people of other races.
Guess what?
My little guy is a very black and white thinker. When we teach him that mitzvos are good and Hashem gave us the mitzvos because we are jews, he interpeted that as "G0yim=BAD".
I didn't know he had this belief until he yelled a [non jew] on Shabbos "You're a [non jew]! Nanana kish kish!". I turned several shades of purple.
ETA why is [non jew] getting switched to [non-jew]??

The Hebrew/ Yiddish word for gentile is used pejoratively as a slur so therefore the autocorrect on this website has changed it.

It was clear by both the context and the fact that they were all black and Hispanic had earrings , tattoos and long hair .

That describes some of my very Jewish cousins.

This bothers me so much. It's a word in the Torah. Very normal part of our vernacular without any negative connotation.
The Internet is the worst.

Or go down there with the village bus, shop, and her husband would pick her up when she was done on his way home from work. (city)
So no, my nephew wasn't exposed to many no jews. There was "the lady" the cleaning lady, and the post man. And the ups guy. Amd the nurses at the pediatrics office and dentist. That's basically about it at that age.
Now he unfortunately is very exposed.... He's had many hospital visits over the years... (unfortunate the circumstances. Not that he sees other people. It's obvious. But with imamother nitpicking I have to say it)
As I wrote in my post, I do mention to then there are decent people all over. But when they learn about so many bad g0yim and see this type of behaviors all around.....
The other day my 11 year old was chased down and being yelled at because one of the teenagers thought she had one of their bikes. (They had the same bike basic bicycle from walmart) the teen was saying to throw her off her bike and loudly yelling that they'll hurt her. she was SHAKING and so traumatized. All she did was pass their house on the way to the neighborhood. Dh drove around looking for them and gave them a stern talking to.
I'm sure there are many nice nonjews. I grew up with some on my block. I loved helping my elderly neighbor water the pretty flowers she grew in her front garden. But at night I'd be created out because she wasn't discernable from the dark. She was so dark skinned that unless you were close by you could miss her.
So I'd be creeped out to pass her house. Or the neighbors who had their entire extended family hang out at their house at every holiday becuase they knew the Jewish neighborhoods were safe. They had some sweet kids. And I tell my kids. Strangers are strangers and we need to judge each individual based on their own actions. But I also don't allow them to hang out and be friends with the one sweet non-jewjsh kid down the block.
Shoot me for it. |
You were scared of someone's house at night because they were dark? You need help lol that is beyond the weirdest thing I have ever heard! My kids have zero non Jewish friends and we have nothing to do with non Jews. But I'm not going to pretend like all Jews are high class individuals with beautiful middos.

I grew up saying non jews. It doesn't bother me whatsoever. I've heard non Jews call themselves goys! My husband did not grow up saying it so if I used the word in front of his family I think they would die lol

I said clear from the CONTEXT as well as the way they looked . Key word: CONTEXT.
Based on the discussion they obviously weren’t black Jews because we were talking about my son being close with non Jews . Makes sense ?

[quote="amother Petunia"]A child of mine asked a secular Jew at 4 or 5 years old whether he was Jewish because he didn’t wear a kippa?
Reminds of my son (when he was 3) asking me if our Israeli cab driver had his upsherin yet cuz he doesn't have a kippah!

Very profound comment. Especially anonymously. My three year old son was not a racist and still isn’t . And neither am I . Sometimes children say embarrassing things . I have never in my life told my children anything other than every person needs to be judged by their own merit . And chances are , someone with multiple friends of different races is not a racist . I am friends with everyone and I’m probably one of the least racist people that exists . I am confident in that . And I don’t just say that ,I put my beliefs into action. I can’t stand racist comments about anyone and I will always call them out . I know how I feel about others and how I teach my children .
Everyone can now carry on calling me a racist and telling me I’m a bad mother and that my son must have made that comment because I taught him that . Make sure to comment anonymously though….

Was once with my kid at a walmart kind of store in the summer, and she kept saying "I don't have brown legs, my legs are clean!" I had no clue what she was on about until I realized that she was at eye-level with everyone's legs and was noticing that they're all a different color than her own. (We live in an area with lots of african americans). I shushed her up really quick!
But, is it racist for her to notice differences in skin tone?
