Every Man a Slave (the story of an eved cannani in the US during the revolution)
It's one of my favorite books but I'm not sure if you can get it in print these days
and there's a continuation called Gone West
Both super historical with fascinating bits of information

I think it's late 1800s or early 1900s and it takes place both in both eastern Europe and America. A pre-teen can definitely read it, the main character is a 15/16-year-old girl.
