I also thought that there was no difference between Payless and Italian leather shoes until I bought my daughter a pair of SmartFit Payless ones. They rubbed against her ankles in this really odd way, so badly that her feet bled. That was the last time I bought for her there.
I buy stride rite for the first pair. After that its what I can find. In my neighborhood certain shoe stores come to the schools on Sundays and have major $25 sales from last years merchandise. They also have someone there to size the kids. Thats where I get her shoes.
And btw, not to sound snobby, but Nine West and Steve Madden are NOT the paragons of quality footwear. I find their shoes extremely uncomfortable. I would never buy Payless for myself. Non leather shoes give me dried cracked feet and peeling skin. Yes, I like my feet! Call me a shoe snob!

amother at least it isn't LH, Ok everyone I paid $62- for a little pair I feel the first few pairs of shoes are very important for a childs foot. If you feel differently then you can buy somewhere else.

Kids in third world countries all over the world grow up in plastic flip flops. It is amazing to see how agile they are and the things that they learn to do in flip flops... Play soccer, climb up the sides of moving buses, do work on ladders three stories high... I wouldn't be surprised if the "high quality" shoes are actually worse for kids' development.

How much more do you think kids fall down and hurt themselves while wearing flip flops? Didn't anyone ever work in a camp and see kids falling all over themselves because their parents sent them to camp in flip flops rather then good sturdy sneakers?

only1 wrote: | It's not necessary for your kid to learn to walk in proper shoes?
You yourself are admitting that you are buying your kid substandard shoes because "he doesn't walk much".
If kids don't have proper shoes, shoes that don't fit properly etc, they can learn to walk funny. Talk to your doctor about it. And if anyones kid learns to walk funny that not only effects their feet, but their legs, their hips and their BACK! That's not stuff you want to mess with. |
Only1, I agree with the amother. This IS a stupid discussion. To clarify your points:
I didn't say my kid "doesn' walk much." I sais my kid is not on his feet as much as I am. Meaning, he can sit when he wants to. I can't.
You say "they can learn to walk funny"...... Actaully, kids shouldn't even be in shoes until they are good walkers. I didn;t take my son for shoes until he was walking for about three weeks and his PT said it was okay.
I actually don't buy "substandard" shoes for my son, I only buy "good" shoes for my son, namely Eccos, Primigi, and STride Rite. However, that's because I have a mother and MIL who love to shop. For a family that doesn't have this, they shouldn't feel like they need to scrimp on groceries to buy Primigis.
I did speak to my son's pediatric PT. She said that as long as the soles are flexible, that's all that matters.
Like I said, I B'H have better things to do than argue with people I don't know about shoes for toddlers. Just wanted to clarify.

I don't know why you think this was an argument. I thought it was more of an interesting coversation. But hey, I hope there are no hard feelings erev rosh hashana.
I just think people should speak to their doctor before trying to save a buck. If you did, then my opinion shouldnt matter to you.

Oh well, I love Payless for myself and the kids. Got some really, really comfy boots there last year.
It's not just the brand/price that matters, but the fit and style. I like that they have wide fit for my middle one. I don't do the cute novelty shoes that put girls in heels with no support.
I do feel like I'm constantly buying shoes for the kids. Oh well, when I'm paying $30 for 2 pair, I don't mind.

I think that often when you go to the more expensive stores, they know how to properly measure and fit the shoes which is really important always - but especially for the first number of pairs when the child isnt able to complain or tell you if a shoe hurts or is uncomfortable. Up until my most recent purchse (below), I always went to this smaller kids shoes store owned by a frum man and he has loads of patience even when the kids are not happy (he sells little tikes so he was what to distract them with too!).
I really lucked out buying kids shoes at The Shoe Company - normally you'd pay for the brand I got like $60-70 but I got them for $32 each (plus $10 off b/c I bought 2 pairs!).

I have seen these kids and trust me, they are NOT falling all over themselves. It probably depends what they are used to. The kids you see in camp are:
-probably not used to flip flops because most of the time they wear other shoes
-are maybe wearing non-flexible flip flops?
