How late can you send out thank you notes

What to do if you get a gift and don't know what it is, and the giver didn't write what it was on the card? For my wedding I got something that I still to this day have no clue what it was -- could have been a salt shaker, could have been a bisamim holder...I don't like writing "thank you for the wonderful gift" without mentioning it by name, but still wonder if I was wrong!!
