I didn't read the other thread. I definitely think it's disgusting to need 2 malecosigner.

However, I did want to point out that here in Brooklyn, landlords generally will only sign leases for couples with the parents as official cosigner to assure payment. Maybe this is part of this type of assurance.....

This is illegal. In all of America. Even for legal apartments it’s illegal.

People have the same issues with legal apartments. That's not the issue.

A woman who is divorced or getting divorced and in desperate in need of an apartment is the last one who's going to be filing a complaint.

Please trust me, if this happened to me, I’d be the first in line to sign a complaint.

It's not illegal to require a cosigner if the person cannot show proof of annual income 40x the monthly rent. Most young couples and single mothers don't have that type of income.

A cosigner is generally required to have double that. The fact is mainly males have that type of income in our community.

I’m actually not shocked and honestly it should be standard on any lease for there to be a co-signer. The only nasty thing here is that it has to be a male specifically. To me it should be anyone who can show 2 paystubs that can cover someone else’s rent too.
As an employee for a landlord and has worked in real estate for many years there are unfortunately many people whom I know firsthand just don’t pay their rent. Some pay nothing some pay a little but they owe tens of thousands upon thousands of dollars and barely make a dent in their old debts.
So yes it makes sense that if one is a single parent household you’d be worried as to how they’d pay their rent. In a functioning 2 parent household if one is down for the count for a few weeks or months hopefully the other pitches in but in a single parent household, who will be the one pitching in?
And again like I said even in a 2 parent household there should still be a co-signer.

Then I doubt they would have any problems. The average single mother is not earning over 100k a year. She might be stereotyped as someone who can't afford it, but if she can show that big a paycheck I doubt she's going to have a very hard time.

But the vast majority of single mothers are not earning that type of money. Hence the problem.
