Why not? Unless the shul has an age requirement
If you and your husband want to try it you can and see how he does.

He'll be 6 shevuos time. Kita alf is kindergarten (or prek), kita bais is pre1a (or Kindergarten), kita gimel is 1st.
Sort of.
Becuase the girls cut off is December. And the boys cut off is tamuz/av
Go figure.
I have 3 kids shevuos time. When my daughter was 5 like him she was in pre1a.
It's kind of intense here the curriculum. He already had his chumash seuda, and they already started chumash last year, halacha, gematria and more.... This year they'll do more chumash and then start on rashi. They only start reading and writing English in kita daled, that's 2nd grade.
When my daughters were his age they were starting with alef bais.... |
Wow intense!!!!!
My son is the same age as yours, will be 6 a week after Shavous. He is in an Israeli chareidi cheider. His class is called Mechinah, next yr will be Kita aleph. They are still learning nekudot and reading 3 letters together (so far only done 2 nekudot, review mostly from last yr) I think right at the end of the yr they do the Chumash siyum. This is his first yr with a rebbe. Last year it was a Gannett full day and a rebbe had a small room and took out groups of 3 boys to learn Aleph Beis for a few minutes each day.
This is the normal here for chareidi Israeli communities.

At the age when they can concentrate for the given time

As a previous poster said, place in the family matters
My oldest, we started in primary. They did their kriah and then my husband taught some halacha picture books- Brachos, the Shabbos book, that type.
My youngest was begging by 3. We let him go at 4 for the last 10 minutes. A little Aleph Bais and then the snack.
But we got it approved by the shul.

Cut off is in the summer?? Wow that's crazy! Is this in the US? My son is turning 6 in kita alef and he's far from the oldest in his class. Turning 6 in the summer of kita beis is extremely young, I never heard of that.

For OP- I think my shul has an age limit, I’m pretty sure my boys started in 1st grade or primary. I guess that means 5 or 6 |
Even for chassidish cheders, age 5 (turning 6 in the summer after) is not kita beis. That's kita alef age.

It depends on the kid. It depends on the shul. I have a relative who ran avos ubonim in to different shuls. One had a young crowd. Kids started at three. The second with a bigger age range. A father with older children should focus his attention on the older children that's who the learning is for. The prizes are also geared for the older children. Sometimes the younger kids cry and get upset over not winning certain prizes. The main part of avos ubinim is for 7-13. 7 is kitta gimel by us. The 5 and 6 come but not every week. Some only start after chanuka and not in the coldest part of the winter. Everyone does there own thing. They prefer not to bring little kids so the real learners get a bigger chance for the prizes. Their are always extra door prizes to bring home to the younger brothers. Some raffles are for kitty daled and older. Starting learning mishnayos.

He can go and review aleph bais, or his father can just learn with him - even if he doesnt understand it all. If he is asking to go to shul - please let him - when he is young its pretty much the only time he will ask to go. Obviously he cant be disruptive to others and depends on the age of the other boys there, but dont dissuade him from going. He can even go a bit later so he doesnt get bored.
