Agree and just to clarify, gut work is absolutely foundational to pandas and tics treatment but it's generally not enough. You need to go after the infections and inflammation as well.

Maybe dr nancy ohara would be a better choice for you OP. She has a book out on functional medicine for pandas and pans so you can get a feel for her approach.

To clarify dc does not have pandas. We’ve been down that road for a very long time and he does not have it. He has Tourette’s which can be exacerbated by environmental factors, allergies, toxins etc. I thought a functional dr tests for all those triggers.

We tried Sara Chana’s book already it did not help.

Oh thanks for explaining.

I think functional medicine can help you a lot but you'd need someone very specialized and specific to help with what you're looking for.

Is your child taking any supplements?
I'm not the expert, but I would think a basic regimen of magnesium, including magnesium threonate, liver support like silymarin, digestive enzymes, and quercetin might be a good basic start.

Exactly! That’s why I’m trying to ask around for recommendations but I’m not getting much 😭

Yes, supplements and medication for years. Hasn’t done anything for him as far as I know which is why I’m looking into the natural route even though I know it will be really hard. He loves to eat and really enjoys food like a true teenager. Cutting out dairy and gluten will be impossible but we are willing to try anything at this point. I just want some kind of testing to see what triggers him instead of blindly torturing him.

You weren't being very specific in your initial ask Wink

If I'm understanding correctly you're looking to narrow down the triggers via functional testing?

Are you using triggers and causes interchangeably? In my mind, chemicals in the environment, food sensitivities, environmental allergies would be triggers, and underlying issues such as gut dysbiosis, heavy metal toxicity, immune dysregulation, chronic infections etc would be considered more of a root cause. Functional medicine seeks to address the root causes. Triggers mostly just need to be avoided.

I also don't know if functional medicine is capable of pinpointing immediate triggers. People usually discover those via keeping journals and close observation. In addressing root causes though, the hope would be that some of the triggers would fall away.

I would probably go with Dr ohara.
