If you can't find the jarred ginger or don't want to spend the $ on it, I would buy a piece of fresh ginger (in the produce aisle, not hard to find) and just grate a little bit of it into the salad. That's what I did the first time I made this salad, and when I subsequently found/used the jarred stuff, I didn't like it as much. The fresh ginger has a much more powerful and pungent flavor and is not at all expensive. I don't think I would use the powder, but if you don't want to use the fresh or jarred, give it a try and see how it tastes!

Ground ginger has a very different taste than the fresh gingerroot or the jarred stuff.

It's better used for cookies and pies than for sushi.

I recently started making this salad but I make it different every time I make it. I often have the chopped up mock crab in the house and not the sticks but that doesn't really make a difference. I also chopped on small pieces of carrot. I sprinkle in sugar. I also use brown rice. I cut the pieces of nori with kitchen scissors and sprinkle it in. I don't put in ginger because the kids don't like it. For my self I sometimes put in wasabi.

Is lox instaed of imitation crab okay? I'm in Israel, and never saw the crab stuff sold, but a friend once ordered "shrimp" at a mehadrin restaurant.

Do you Americans really just call it crab and crab sticks - not "imitation crab"?

Parve ice cream used to be called that - now people just say ice cream.

The salad would taste fine without the imitation crab. Its just the idea of what goes into sushi but making it a salad. It probably taste fine with raw fish or cooked fish, even lox. The main ingredient is rice with soy-vinegar- sugar sauce. Put anything that you would eat in sushi.

I don't mean to be contradictory, but I think it's called "surimi". I think sashimi is raw fish.

This sounds great, I want to try it. How do you make your soy-vinegar-sugar sauce? Do I have to use seasoned rice vinegar?

Can I use raw tuna (I love raw tuna Smile or raw salmon?

Does it need to be special "sushi" tuna or salmon? Is regular dangerous? "sushi" tuna is so expensive.

This salad is awesome! I use white regular rice instead of sushi rice. A wonderful combo is Imitation crab, cucumber, carrots, avocado, nori and Mango is a great addition too. I think the crab is vital to it tasting like a sushi salad but it's a shame you can't serve it with the meat part of the meal on shabbos, so I serve this salad with the first course instead.

Any of the Israelis reading this ever find the imitation crab sold here? I would love to try this recipe, but it's not the same with lox...also, is rice vinegar available in Israel?

imitation crab- I haven't seen it at Meatland in Raanana but I suspect my new local Eden health food store may carry it. I'll let you know!

Forgot about that...but I doubt said cravings will go away after the baby's born, and might take me longer than that to locate said crab sticks Smile
