My niece's flight home was cancelled (via Rome). And the new flights are almost double the price.

Whatever you do, make sure to purchase travel insurance. At least if there are cancellations, you'll be covered

If the airline cancels the flight, do they refund the cost of the ticket?

I booked her nonstop on elal. I assume if the airline cancels we'll be refunded.
Elal has a $260 cancellation fee so that's the most I can be out if I cancel, plus I booked on a credit card with travel insurance.
