The donuts made at the Dunkin HQ bakery are certified kosher. Many stores have the donuts delivered form the HQ and dont make them in the store itself. Some stores sell non-kosher products and wont get certification for the donuts they sell. And some stores make/fry the donuts in the store itself with dough from Dunkin HQ-- so that needs certification.

Which is what the other poster said in fewer words. Not all dunkins are kosher.

And I clarified that the wholesale HQ bakery has kosher donuts. It starts out kosher. If you have access to the HQ bakery you can buy there.

The manufacturer. And I was new to all of this and it was a bargain from the quoted $3,500 price from the Lakewood SM and the mainstream $2000 Irene which was talked up as being "processed hair" that wouldn't last more than a year... Or the $5-6,0000 Dini and Shevy. But I can say -- NEVER AGAIN! There's a reason so many sheitel machers hate the Wig Outlet -- well guess what, it isn't kosher to be marking up the price 6 times on something that frum women feel is a necessity.

I a teacher and a mother of an adorable chubby preteen girl.
Every year my daughter has a school party,a class party, then we have 2 family parties. One from each side the Donuts are a big attraction. When ordinary many Donuts most places give a little discount they are bright colored and something everyone looks forward to. At the end of chanuka she has gained donut weight. She loves Donuts want it all year but luckily I'm able to tell her that she will get Donuts before chanuka the Donuts during the year are just not the same. Even during the year she had been treated with Donuts.
I work in a school. Not everyone could give a $25+ some parent feel good buying me a $2. Donut. They only spent $2 on me. Some parents buy me the "luxury" $10 donut they camt figure out how to treat me this way they feel they are giving me "luxury" for just $10.
This is just to give you another perspective a donut could be used as a gift as an incentive as a treat for yourself as a party food. The frum "herd" decides on the price. Just please people don't look at the herd or the market when deciding if you should purchase a donut at any given price. Look if it Normal for YOU to purchase a donut at that price. Because the frum market makes so much more money through peer pressure. It will be a more natural market if grumpy people didn't begrudgingly buy donuts because this became a market minhag for eating fried food.

Now they are everywhere and becoming the norm to serve at a nice party. It just ups the standards. If people could say no when something first comes up we wouldn’t have this constant doubling and tripling of standards. |
I haven’t yet been to a party that serves expensive donuts. And we have quite a few. To me, the expensive donuts are what we splurge on one day of chanuka, one per kid.
Listen everyone needs to make a living. Personally I’m a professional owing a ton in student loans so yes I think the cost of my professional services are justified. It’s ridiculous that people like shaitel machers can charge as much as they do. But as long as there are affordable ones, I’m not complaining. If someone decides they’re a luxury shaitel macher and they can get a high end customer base, good for them. I have the choice whether or not to give them business. If there were no affordable ones that would be a diff story.

The bakeries are just factories. As far as I'm aware, they don't sell to the public.

And here I am stuck on the fact that these expensive donuts aren't even fresh. I don't care how fancy, I like fresh. If they're buying the base elsewhere, that's one stale donut by the time I get to eat it.

Best donut I had was a plain chocolate one with napolean cream inside. Don't know which company but sold by the grocery. Better than the Sesame one I tried.

For me, the best donut is one that has just come out the frying pan. Freshness is key.
The rest are just cakes with fancy toppings. Which might also be delicious, but I don't consider that a donut.

These are not actually "donuts" even though that's rhat they're called. For a fancy cake I'm sure it's ok to charge more. Unless they really are "donuts" and then anybody who buys these things are crazy because you can get at your grocery for $2 each or less.

In Lakewood- kosher west had all diff flavor donuts. Strawberry, lotus, custard, vanilla and all diff toppings. They were delicious (better than a bug known company here thay I took one bite and thought I would die from sugar overload) and they cost 1.99 a donut!
Pretty sure they were beigels company. And really was a nice treat that was affordable and actually really tasty.
I never buy those elaborate donuts after I tasted once. It's not a necessity and anyone can charge what they want. Just look around for normal stores selling at normal prices.

Either you can afford it or you can't. Or you indulge in a little in honor of the chag.
There's always been people who have more and who have less. Serving expensive and fancier dishes, cuts of meat etc for chagim and shabbos |
I feel like spending more on meat boards can be justified more than spending a fortune on donuts.

Yep, I never buy these insanely pricy donuts but I was just talking with a friend who told me she bought one and it was just stale, she couldn't get past that, doesn't matter how yummy the filling or topping is if the donut itself is stale.

One place gave me a price then said "Oh we are going up for the week of Dec. 8" such as they sell donuts for $0.99, but Dec. 8 that week they are selling them for $1.25
I called up another place and they said out donuts are $0.99
(don't remember the real price)
Ever since then I have seen that some places really do raise the price in honer of Chanukkah. |
That’s price gouging and actually against the law, aside from it being halachically wrong.

I am at the Lubavitch Rebbe's Ohel erev YK and never do this but stop a woman and ask her where she bought her wig and learn about "the wig outlet." I sign up and go to their 2 for $800 sale on erev sukkos. Wig looks just the same if not better than the $2800 wig. Don't be fools, don't be taken whether it's sheitels or donuts. You want to splurge, that's your choice. |
I hope you didn’t let that dishonest SM get away with it. You should demand a refund or take her to beis din. She won’t appreciate her reputation being ruined and will likely try to settle with you.

I don't think nost states include donuts in their price gouging laws. It's usually just essential items.

Are we being ripped off? And we being taken advantage of because it’s the season and why not charge as much as you can cuz everyone wants them and if they can get away with doing highway robbery then why not go for it?
I mean come onnnnnn $6,7,8,9,10 a donut?!?! How is that ok? Does it actually cost that much to make a donut?!
Happy Chanuka!!!! |
