Dh and I were invited to sheva brachos this week for a friend of his from college. We were not invited to the. Should we bring a gift? A big gift? a token? Does it matter that we wouldn't have gone to the wedding if were invited because it was very far away?

If you weren't invited to the wedding, there's no reason to bring a gift.

When I was in this situation, we gave a small gift like a cookbook or challah knife (about $20-30).

When my grandparents made sheva brochos for us, we recieved small gifts from their friends that came (and were not invited to the wedding).

It depends. If it's a major fancy catered thing like a second wedding, then yes. If it's a little local thing in someone's house, just a minyan and wives, then usually no. It also depends on how close we are to the couple, or given our age, more likely their parents. If we're close, then yes. If we were invited b/c they need a minyan and live nearby but we really don't know the people, then for sure not.
