it's funny how only the people who did NOT have a bechor who had a pidyon haben have a problem with the title! I changed it so you don't feel too bad!

We had a pidyon haben. The only from all my siblings, since they each had either a girl or a c-section. My parents didn't have one either, because my mom is a bas levi.
It was a nice enjoyable part, I was able to take care of the whole thing myself, unlike the bris where all I wanted was for it to be over.

I'm surprised to see such a large percentage had pidyons--maybe there is a bias on the part of the responders, with non-pidyoners being less likely to even read the thread?

Pidyons are relatively rare-- there are many reasons for not having one. Maybe one of the math whizzes can figure out the probability: Start with the fact that close to 50% of live births are female. That makes the chance of any baby requiring pidyon slightly more than 50%. Multiply that by the likelihood of any given Jewish baby being a firstborn; by the percentage of births that are by C-section; by the percentage of Cohanim/Leviim and Bnot Cohen/Levi among Jews...you will wind up with a very small number.

I had numerous miscarriages. The longest one was 11 weeks. We knew we were having a boy so we knew we would have a question. In the end we had an emergency c section at 33 weeks so the question was answered. We wouldve had the pidyon 2 days before the bris so I'm glad we didn't have one. And we had SUCH A HUGE crowd at the vach nacht and bris, got so many gifts, KE"H, that a pidyon wouldve already been overkill. H' knows what He does Smile

maybe if there was a choice to vote "no, my first was a girl" more people would vote and you'd see the numbers more even??

I typed that choice but I didn't realize that you have to click after you type your last choice to add a new choice so it didn't show up!

then I changed the title so the girl option wouldn't work too well! Wink

My son had a pidyon haben, it was very special. There were a few of them among my friends in fairly close order. One of my friends had a c-section and could not have the pidyon haben. She was really disappointed. I had another friend whose ultrasound said a boy and she wound up having a girl. She was also really disappointed as her family was all prepared to come in for a bris - then no bris - no family celebration. Boys DO come into this world with more pomp and ceremony. I personally enjoyed the calmness after having a girl later.

Yes, my son and my husband had a pidyan haben. I think its very rarely that both father and son should have a pidyan haben. I dont know anyone else who had it like my family. Plus I am also a bechore (without p.h. of course LOL LOL I wonder did any of you know how common it is for father and son to have pidyan haben?
