Okay, this is a true story that happened to me this morning, I still can't get over it...

I will try to eliminate identifying details, as someone may recognize the people involved otherwise...So I was in Brooklyn running some errands. One of my errands involved having an item fixed that I had bought at a "home business," anyone who has ever been in Brooklyn knows that Brooklyn is full of them. Anyway, this particular business is in the family's actual house, as opposed to most businesses which are in basements. In other words, when you go there to purchase something, you actually walk into their dining/living room and do business there. The business is owned by a lovely chassidish family.
Anyway, I have been there several times, and as far as I can recall, except for the first time I went, when I needed their address/hours, I have never called before going. Of course, I always went during "normal business hours" and not at night or any other inappropriate time. So as I was saying, this errand was on my "to-do" list while in Brooklyn today, I had been waiting to take care of it for a few months. I got there at around 11 AM, parked in front and rang the doorbell. As I hadn't been there in a while, I was not 100% sure when I rang the doorbell that I was at the right house.
As soon as the door swung open, I quickly scanned the room with my eyes to make sure I was at the right house...I recognized it immediately, but something was different...it took a few seconds to register that the table, where the merchandise is normally laid out, was covered with a fancy white cloth, and beautifully set with bowls of fruit, platters of cake, maybe some flowers, etc...The room had 3 sets of couples in it, 2 middle-aged and one young couple...I met the eyes of the proprietor, whom I recognized from previously meeting her. She was more "fa-pitzed" than I had seen her before, and smiled nervously...I stammered, "I came to fix this...." and she said, "Oh, you should have called first..." At this point it was clear that we both knew that I knew what was going on, and I hightailed it out of there as quickly as I could....So have you all figured out what I "walked in on"???!!!

It's a was many Chassidim make Shidduchim. Two young people meet in one of the parents' homes while the sets of parents sit in another room and chat. If the beshow goes well, the couple are engaged.

Now I'm wondering what it was I walked in on...I don't think I caused any harm, mainly b/c the lady just called me and left a message and didn't sound too upset...I called her back but she wasn't available, I guess I'll speak to her tom. morning...I'M certainly not going to bring "it" up, though!!!

Don’t feel weird, you helped break the ice and you became a conversational topic. Way to go. You know how it’s like to pray for a distraction? Presto!

hey, we've all done something like that.

erev shavuos while I was engaged I went to my il's to bring them a cheesecake. sil opened the door, giggled nervously, asked what I was doing there...

turns out her then not-yet-chosson was meeting the family right then and they were sitting down to a serious meal on erev shavuos. and I walked in with a cheesecake.

they got engaged a week before our wedding. see? I didn't cause any problems.

I dont think you need to feel bad, for which normal mother opens the door wide so that everyone can see what's going on during a bshow? These things are done away from peoples' eyes! You had probablyw alked in AFTER the bshow, when they were about to make a lchaim. or... before the bshow had even started, for why were the mechutonim sitting in the room?

But it is a very funny story! Smile

[quote="elf123"]

who does that at 11 in the morning on a weekday? if it hadn't been you it would have been the lady next door ringing the bell to borrow a cup of sugar or the kid from cheder collecting for Pe'eylim.

what language is the word "beshow" anyway, and does it rhyme with know or with cow?
