I'm trying to take a picture of something that is stainless steel (particularly, the buckle of a belt) and every time I snap, the flash bounces off the steel and I get a picture that has a glare in it. Any way to avoid that?

Get better lighting in the room and turn off the flash. Or wait for a sunny day and photograph it in natural light without the flash.
If you have a flash that tilts, tilt it upwards.

I don't know what kind of camera you have. If you intend to do a lot of photography you may want to get an external flash which will attach to the camera's hot shoe or place to plug in an external. You can go on line to find instructions how to bounce the flash. This means directing the light from the flash to a reflective surface which then "bounces" it back to the subject.
