My friends husband's tefillin was stolen.
Since they figured that any robber would trash the goods, they started searching the nearby streets and looking into the big garbage bins.
A man from their shul noticed the husband looking through the rubbish and came over to him. He took out his wallet and said (seriously) " I didn't know things were so bad...How can I help?"
The husband couldn't respond for 5 minutes he was laughing so hard.
The good news is that being a kollel family - they at least had insurance so the cost of a new one was fully covered.

My brothers teffilin were stolen. my mom found them in a ditch a few blocks away from our house.
