Help! When my baby was born he cried tons. I cut out all wheat & dairy foods from my diet (a great way to get back to prepregnancy weight!) plus other foods that I had read about that make a baby gassy. The problem is that he still screams in pain when he needs to pass gas and wakes up in middle of the night (in between 3 hour feedings) screaming and the only way to comfort him is by feeding him! Basically, I am not getting much sleep these days. I am like a walking talking zombie!

you should take him to the doctor to see if he is allergic to anything

Do you burp your baby after each feeding?

My son was extremely gassy too. But don't worry - it passes!!! LOL no pun intended. But seriously, by the time he is six months old it will probably be a thing of the past. I remember walking the kitchen floors at all hours of the night with my screaming baby, hoping not to wake the neighbors. In the meantime, try to make sure he gets plenty of hind milk - the fatty milk at the end of a feeding and not just the foremilk - the more watery kind at the beginning. I think too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk can cause gassiness. And try not to calm him by feeding him again and again when he cries - you may compound the problem. Instead, try rocking - or running him around in a stroller.
Good luck! I know how frustrating it is!

Just by the way - do you have an overabundant supply of milk? Do you have a very forceful letdown? If so, it might be contributing to the problem. I have some helpful pointers if neccessary. Let me know!

Could it be reflux pain and not just gas in the tummy that is bothering the baby? I would ask the pediatrician, especially if baby is arching while crying.

One way to relieve gas pain is by gently "bicycling" the baby's legs or gently bringing his knees to his chest. Rubbing his stomach in a clockwise (or is it counter-clockwise?) fashion can also have a calming effect.
