You need a degree or equivalent coursework in either an art/graphic design/architecture type field (if applying as a design patent examiner), or a STEM field if applying as a 'regular' patent examiner.

I am not in the us and didn't study there. I studied in Israel, it's 3 years of schooling with a lot of clinicals built in. You leave with a bachelors and can work in any of those fields. Some of them do require more on the job training.

Regulatory, specifically public utility law. It's a great field. Small and specialized.
