We've done:
Butterfly (tutu costume, with wings and a wand)
Cookie monster (tutu costume, with cookie headband)
This year my 4yo dd is set on being either a fire girl or a fire dog. As long as it has a tutu it's girly and acceptable lol

Thanks for your reply! A butterfly is cute but too similar to ballerina costume I think.
We're not into characters so cookie monster won't work...
