How often do you paint your house? And how do you handle the hassle of the furniture and things in the way.

I have not painted since I moved in 20 years ago. My children know not to touch the walls. I do use Mr clean magic eraser and my walls are neutral.

So far never fully redid in the same color. Spot touch ups as needed, DIY, have been good enough.

There are no cracks or scratches on the walls?

If I would be able to afford it I would paint once a year. In Israel, rental and can’t use regular oil paint so can’t clean the walls properly. Every fingerprint, oil stain, scuff mark… shows. And our walls aren’t white so can’t use magic sponge.

When we moved in we had “builder grade paint.” It was flat paint, not washable, and cheap. Because of this it looked like trash within 6 months of living there. We painted certain parts of the house ourselves slowly over the years. It take a lot longer than you think and you will probably leave drips. We just did our entire main floor after 6 years of living here. It should have been don’t years ago but we didn’t have the money. This time we opted for high gloss and semi gloss and upgraded to durable paint. It cost an extra $250 but it’s washable and will be easy to clean. It looks great! I know some people hate gloss but it reflects the light really nicely and looks nice. We did the kitchen, bathroom, and hallways in high gloss, and the living room and other living spaces in semi gloss.

Living here 7 years, only repainted one room. Rest of the house looks decent, I’d love to repaint the whole house but it’s not in the budget yet. I assume it’s 5-10 k

We had to repaint after a year of living here because it was the garbage builders grade paint. Now it’s two years later and even though we paid for supposed better paint the wear and tear on the walls is noticeable. How do people go so many years without painting? Am I just too sensitive about all the spots?

It varies every family! In some families kids literally color on the walls

Listen my walls are not perfect but they’re decent. All colors, satin paint I think or eggshell. They definitely stain. But I don’t live in a museum

My walls still look great after 8+ years, but my husband used to make the little kids crazy not to touch the walls.

My kids are pretty tame. Most of it is from when we hosted other people. So people ignore the stains? It drives me crazy! Not that we have money to constantly repaint. Seems people hardly paint so everyone just looks away? Don’t get me started on my scratched hardwood..

I wouldn't do a full repaint if the walls were colored on, I'd wash it off to the best of my ability and do a light touch up.

Living in my house ten years. Was a new construction. Painted a lot of it over. Hallway twice. 3/5 bedrooms. Family room. Want to paint dining room in next few months.

White by steps we randomly do ourselves.

Good quality paint should wash decently. I'm definitely not neurotic about keeping the walls clean but they get wiped down with a wet rag every so often and look good.

We painted once after 8 years because I couldn't stand the colour the previous owners picked.

I think it depends on person.

I’m not so particular. We painted last 19 years ago. Every so often I wipe down the walls with a magic eraser.

My neighbor next door just repainted her whole house after 10 years bec she notices everything. It’s a huge job.

OP, this could have been me writing this Smile We're in this house about 2 years and the scratches are bothering me. The floor is also showing more wear than I would like. I was also wondering how often others paint, and I'm surprised no one is saying 2-5 years.

Exactly. I only started noticing how bad other people’s walls looked when I started being all self conscious about my own. But then it just made me feel a bit better so maybe you’re helping other people feel more ok with their walls also 🙂 I would definitely get them painted every 3 years if I had the money to do so. I wouldn’t mind the hassle of moving furniture. I don’t have the time to paint it myself though.
