I also once had an unusually large bill. I didn't have the money to pay it and at that time I didn't have a credit card. I told the cashier it was impossible. He said "Look how much you bought!" I answered him, yes, but there were a lot of canned goods that in those days were about 75 cents each. He was getting angry at me and said "look at the line! You have to pay!" I was quite embarrassed and insisted that it can't be the total and anyway I didn't have that kind of money. At the end, he checked and saw he charged me 75 DOLLARS per can instead of 75 cents! Didn't apologize either especially after embarrassing me in front of the long line of customers who were all chuckling! I guess in the end HE was embarrassed!

You can dispute the charge.
My daughter went out with some friends to a local icecream-type place, and they charged her twice by mistake (she had my credit card). The cashier realized she made a mistake and told DD what happened, but she didn't know how to undo it. They forwarded the issue to management, who asked me to dispute the charge. I did so and got my $$ back. It was very easy.

I had a story in bingo also where I bought plates for $3.99 and I bought 5 packages and they charged me $39.99 per package. I didn't realize until I got home and it was a huge hassle to get them to refund me but eventually they did

My mother once got charged around $500 for carrots. She didn't realize because it was part of a huge Pesach order. Don't remember what made her look at the receipt but bH she did.

I keep an eye on the computer while checking out & I always check my receipt before leaving the store.

Am I the only one who uses the self scanner in bingo? I know that mistakes can happen anywhere but if you know they tend to be negligent why don’t you just use the self scanner? Makes life so much easier imo.

My cleaning lady went to buy windex in bingo for me and they put on her receipt that she bought formula as well which she didn't buy and the cashier refused to give her change correctly. She was so surprised how they acted, she was so mad. Till she made a whole fuss and they refunded her....
Also I wanted to buy a Betty crocker. It was labeled 24.99 sale and scanned as 32.99. I left it there....

Even in store the people at the customer service desk aren’t very knowledgeable. I asked them there a certain item is they said it’s out of stock not coming any time soon but as I walked around it was in plain sight plenty on the shelves.

Have you ever tried eliminating something you scanned because you either changed your mind or you scanned too many? I tried self scanning in a store once, and its a headache too. I couldnt eliminate anything.

Also, they're not exactly hiring Harvard graduates...
Not trying to be rude, and I'm not saying they're stupid, but they're generally poor uneducated immigrants, who have a tenuous grasp on English and math. They're not too motivated to correct their mistakes, it's not at their expense after all.

Update:
Manager said that on that day the computer wasnt working so they did all the sales manually and American Express should have realized it and caught it. So I asked why BINGO didnt go through that days sales and check for duplicate charges and cancel/refund them? He had no answer. Manager said I should see that amount refunded to my account within 2-3 days, and the manager gave me his cellphone number.
Somehow I dont think American Express is at fault in any way. Its Bingo that would be gaining from this error, not American Express.

I don’t know how it works in Brooklyn, but in the 5T one, it’s not hard at all. You just click on the item you want to remove, click remove, and verify. Very easy.

Self check out and the bingo scanners are different. I don’t do self checkout when I go shopping, I prefer a cashier to check me out. At bingo, I use the scanner, and it’s a cinch. Once you go through the scale, I don’t know if you are even able to remove anything anymore, so I can’t imagine where the headache would be.

Yeah this is all common here in all supermarkets. I always look as they scan and ensure all sales come off before I pay, or try to see most of it. I also look over the recipt before I leave the store as well and return or dispute any items that were marked wrong.
I double check I took everything (since in Israel we bag ourselves and they will often start scanning the next customer before you are fully bagged).
This is my normal here in any supermarket. But a lot of people don't do these things.
I was once overcharged by over 500$ in a international nonjewish luxury store here and it took over two weeks and endless phone calls to get the money back. I doubt that would happen in the USA branches...

I hate the scanner system because I find it another thing to remember to do in a big sensory environment like a supermarket. But my husband loves it, and so do most people I know.
