with a prescription -1 and -.5? Dr. said mild and just for school, but no chalk board at this age so not sure the point? Does it make eyes worse to have glasses?

Why did you get him tested? Was there an issue?
How is it affecting him?
I would because not having them could mean he is missing out, gets headaches etc. But I would get one with a warranty. Target had one where you paid a drop extra and then you paid $25 each time you needed a new frame or 25 for the lenses. With a 4year old you will need to get them fixed...

Yes because my older kids (7-8 years old) started at such numbers and said it made such a difference. And I think in preschool teachers still hold things up like books by story time…

He’s going to need them more and more as time goes on. What’s the downside of getting them now? Unless he’s the type to break or lose them on the first day. If you have insurance you can try out the cheapest pair and see how it goes

Definitely get once they start learning to read. My daughter got at 6 with -1 and -1.5, and within a week, her reading was noticeably better. She didn’t need to work/strain as hard to see, so she was able to focus better on the actual task.
One of my kids got glasses at 4, but was very necessary. Went to a good glasses store. Spent a tad extra to get really cute frames that he loved. His vision was so much better with the glasses, he never took them off, BH only got a new pair when his prescription changed a year later. For the better.

My ds is -.5 and the optician said to review in 6 months and see, that at this age it's still fine. Look into miyosmart or similar to help slow progression.

I get my kids early prescriptions. supposedly it helps slow down the progression. it also does make a difference. my 6 year old has an easier time reading now that she has glasses even though her prescription is very low.

-.5 and -1 won't make much of a difference for reading close up. It can help though with seeing the board or when the teacher holds up a book during storytime.
