I know it's the wrong time for this question now... but I really want to buy a menorah now to have for next year. Between nickel and silver plated, is silver plated not as good because it tarnishes over time with heat, etc??

It all depends on your priorities. If you like a luxe look but can't afford sterling, go for plated, understanding that it will require polishing, and, depending on quality, may eventually wear off to reveal the base metal underneath. If low maintenance is your mantra, go for something else.
Uh....why davka nickel? And is it nickel-plated or solid nickel (is there such a menorah?) Why not brass, or bronze, or stainless steel? There are many attractive choices besides silver plate and nickel.

I'm looking for a silver color. just not sure if nickel will last better than silver plated.

silver lasts great but have to polish it
if you can’t see yourself doing that then silver isn’t for you
