That you feel is idiotic and/or a waste of time at work?
How did you respond?

Every time something like this happens, I go into flight mode and just want to quit. I know it's not a reasonable reaction to have every time, but my boss often asks impractical and time consuming things of me and doesn't seem to realize that there are better ways of doing things.

Ugh this is so frustrating! I can't leave because it pays well and I may not be able to find another job like it in my field.

Sometimes, but usually my manager thinks (and tells me) also that it's a waste of time, but it's usually important to someone higher up. Like we know something won't work, but they want us to do the whole thing just to show that it doesn't work.
I think it's ok with me because of the combination of 1. my manager validating that it's a waste 2. The goal of my project in my mind becomes "show the director that this won't work" which is useful, rather than "spend time on a project that won't work"

Yes. Welcome to the life of working under people.

My boss makes many decisions / recommends strategies that I don’t approve of but it’s not my company so I can voice my opinion but I can’t NOT do it.
What helps is when the client is with me and doesn’t approve my bosses decisions. I know I’m not totally off the path.

It's extra frustrating because I think I have a pretty good feel for how to do things efficiently, so when I'm asked to do something the long and hard way, it makes me want to tear my hair out.

Hate it! I hate it that when I offer to optimize processes, people assume right away that I am fighting to climb the ladder and seek to shut me down

I had this! A "manager" (new untrained hire who thought he was god's gift since he has a law degree in a different field) decided that I must do something completely unnecessary and over complicating. He told me to force my team to do it too. I stood my ground. I spoke to HR, my location's manager, and the bigwigs from way high up in the company. They all agreed with me eventually.

He didn't get along with the bosses in our location, and told them he won't listen. He told them to force me to listen to him on this point (again, totally unnecessary and a waste of time and energy). I told my HR that if he doesn't let this go, it proves he doesnt know what he's talking about, and it will be a question of him leaving or me. BH he left and I got a raise lol

Depends what it is like and why does it have to be in that specific way? I definitely can't stand if someone's micromanaging but if they just need a tas gun it doesn't matter how it gets done then. I don't think that's as big of a deal. Although I totally understand if you were to, they needed it to be in a certain way

Soooo relate to this! It’s beyond frustrating. Especially when the task the (clueless) manager is asking us to do just creates unnecessary obstacles to servicing the clients.

I hate micromanagers.
