Do you/DH own a gun? If yes, where do you keep it for safety purposes, and like the poll says, do you kids know you own one?
Does your DH (or you 😜) carry regularly?
If you have a regular safe for legal docs and jewelry, do you have a separate safe for the gun, or same safe?

I've got guns. They're mine. DH isn't interested. Kids are aware. I grew up with guns too. Guns and ammo are kept separately. I have a permit to carry but never do.

Yes, DH owns multiple firearms. They are always either locked up in the safe or in his concealed carry holster. DH invested in a lot of training and is considered a highly capable shooter. As a trained shooter, he feels it is his responsibility to carry when he goes to shul just in case chas v'shalom there were ever an attack there. DH taught me and our teenagers how to shoot well so we would know what to do in an emergency as well, but at this stage of my life, I do not want to carry. It is very important to teach children gun safety. Kids who are aware of guns know much better to never touch a gun if they ever find one lying around.
You should have a dedicated safe for your gun and do not use it for valuables. Also, the safe should be bolted to your floor so that a thief cannot carry it away.
You'd be surprised how many people own/carry and you just never realized it.

Oh, I know many people IRL who carry, but mostly my parents age. I don’t know that many my age, with lots of kids home. DH has met many frum people at the shooting range. You can technically look it up by address.
Thanks for pointing out about bolting to the floor!
My main concern is the technical aspects of safety and kids.

We have multiple guns since my oldest was 2.5. Its always been something they know about, gun safety has been a conversation whenever it's around. We have a large biometric gun safe in our garage with everything locked up inside.
We have a shooting range in our backyard and started teaching our kids how to shoot from about 6-7 years old. They couldn't pull the trigger yet but learned how to aim and how the recoil feels
If you have any particular questions feel free to ask

I think this is very geographical.
DH owns several guns, all are locked up except the one he always legally conceal carries
My kids ages 9 and up know about them and he practices with them and teaches them safety procedures constantly
I would guess at least 50% of the males in our shul are carrying on a regular basis

Yes and the kids know. It’s kept in a gun safe, separate from the ammo. Probably not so useful in an emergency when we’d need to act quickly, but no chance of a kid getting hurt. It’s really hard to load a gun I can barely do.

Where might a child find a gun lying around?

Um, hopefully nowhere.
Guns should never be lying around.
But it is true that kids who are aware of them will have a healthy respect for the fact that they are serious, deadly weapons and not toys and will not try to play with them.

Yeah but again, where would this even be an issue except in the home of a gun owner?

My husband owns a gun. But we also live in yesha in israel. Everyone and their brother own guns here.
As soon as my husband brought it home he showed everyone and explained how to use it and where the safe is.

We own a gun and DH is a trained shooter with a concealed carry permit. People would be surprised if they knew, we’re a typical heimish in-town family and lately many of DH friends are doing the same. We don’t talk about it but the older kids know.

We got licenses and a permit/gun about a year ago, post October 7. Many of our friends did the same and we went through the process together.
My kids are all old enough to vote (and do exercise their right to vote). They know about the gun and DH took them to the range and they were taught how to use it properly.
It is kept in its own safe (with the passports and money to flee), not in the safe we go into with jewelry or regular cash. Obviously the safe is bolted down.
B”H mental health is not one of the challenges we struggle with. If it was, we would not have brought a gun into our home.

We are a pretty typical heimish Bais Yaakov type family as well. Plenty of people in shul carry.

Curious: people who carry guns, what do they do at night? Sleep with them? Lock them up?

Oh my goodness, I live in Switzerland and reading those comments reminds of the comic books I used to read as kid, about the Wild West.
Just that nowadays frum Jews also carry guns, and not just in the West apparently.
Somehow, Israeli's carrying guns make sense. About every second week there's an "incident", where a civilian carrying a gun saved the day.
When was the last time, you know of a frum Jew in the US, that had to use his gun?

We are chareidi in Israel and dh has a gun. He wears it hidden. Our kids know about it but we've told them not to advertise it to the public.
