I work in a school. I'm not a main teacher, but I do have a high position. I receive around $40 chanukah gelt total. I give one son's Rebbe more than that! I come out with less money after chanukah gelt -- not more! I stopped giving chanukah gelt at this point to anyone but the rebbeim. I may give small gifts to teachers if I get around to it. If I was well to do, I would be happy to give nice money to one and all. No one is going to stop this practice. If people are wealthy and can afford it, its' a beautiful thing. If you can't afford to give, then really don't! Give a note with a $5 gift or nothing at all. That's what I do.
