Try on jewelry but not buying

Is it ok to go to a frum jewelry store and tell them that I’m not buying anything but would like to try on some pieces? Would they be annoyed and refuse, or would they be ok with it? I would try to go when the store is quiet and they aren’t busy with customers.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t let you, as it can have you come back to buy something in the future. I worked in retail and we were never allowed to tell a customer we wouldn’t help them. Because even a non paying customer is still a potential customer

Smart stores don’t mind. Many people try on without planning to buy, fall in love with the piece, and come back to buy it sooner or later.

Why don’t you use one of those places to create the custom piece? Trying on with the intent to copy and give someone else the business doesn’t feel right.

That is really not nice. Then you’re not even a potential customer. You’re just using them.

That’s what I was thinking. It could be I’ll notice another piece I would want to purchase in the future. Or refer people to them if they have good service

Right, that is why I would make it clear that I’m not planning on purchasing the piece. Just wondering if most stores would be annoyed that I’m asking to try in that case. As for why I’m using a remote jeweler, it’s because I have a credit with them for a substantial amount that I need to use.

It’s wrong. You’re fooling them by having them think that you’ll be back and actually purchase something but you have zero intention to do so. You’re wasting their time, it’s a form of stealing.

I'm a saleslady in a jewelry store. My boss pays me to serve customers and sell them our merchandise. I'm not being paid by the remote jeweler ,to act as his showroom. Sorry OP but my personal opinion is that it's not permissible.

There is a halacha about this if you're planning to buy from someone else it's not allowed.

In general I think halachically it’s only allowed if you might purchase the item there

(Although if you get permission from the store after you tell them the whole story- that you’re buying elsewhere but would like to know if you can try on- it’s probably allowed)

I just had a similar situation op, wanted to get a sense of how a piece would look on me.
I didn’t go to a frum small store but a giant department store type place and was honest that I was just trying on to see what looks good on me.
