My 3.5 year old child devoleped cross eyes about 8 months ago. She got glasses and her eyes became even more crossed and they are now severley crossed. Two doctors that saw her said that the glasses did not cause her eyes to get worse. I am still unsure about it. She is also farsighted which the doctor said has nothing to do with her cross eyes. This also seems strange to me.
The doctor is now saying that her eyes will not get better on their own and it is necessary to have surgery as soon as possible before the situation gets worse.
Has anyone had experience with this?
I am feeling very confused and overwhelmed. I really don't want my child to need eye surgery.

Have you looked into vision therapy at all?

I'd also look into feldenkrais/Anat baniel

my son was born cross eyed (so was my husband).
Cross eyed is caused by tightness of the muscles.
He had surgery at six months. it was outpatient. he had it in a surgery center.
There is no recovery period.

How did your daughter “develop” a tightness of her muscles at almost 3 years old?

Of course it can show up later.
My mother noticed at 21/2.
I didn't have surgery till I was 7.
I had double vision.
I ended up needing a few surgeries to get the muscle right.
It's not only about tightness of muscles.
Sometimes the brain isn't using the eyes together properly. It's pretty common for it to come out a little later.
The surgery btw is not usually a big deal.

What doctor are you using?

My daughter had to have surgery at four. The surgery is really not a big deal and the younger they are the less of a big deal it is. Young kids recover really fast from it, my daughter had no recovery time, she was fine straight after. If you put it off she she still needs it , it will be more difficult when she's older if she needs it

Maybe a developmental optometrist will have some insight for you. Would prism glasses or vision therapy help?. Most opthalmologists are not familiar with those methods

My ds eyes crossed at 3. He saw double. See disclaimer on bottom

We went to a pediatric opthomologist. He gave us a script for bifocals, which helped his eyes not cross. We went to the dr every 6 months to monitor his vision.

When ds was 12 the dr wanted to do surgery. He said that he couldn't figure out a script that would keep ds eyes from crossing.

I went to Dr Wang for a second opinion and we stayed in his practice since then. Dr Wang tested his eyes, said ds is not a candidate for prism glasses. He gave us a unique script and we went back frequently for a checkup. (The local eye glass store filled the script incorrectly. Bh we had a follow up after 2 weeks and it was noticed and corrected)

Ds is an adult now. His eyes cross without glasses. With glasses he sees well, bh. He has the same script for the last few years. Unfortunately ds is not a candidate for contacts, so it's glasses for life.

Disclaimer: ds has low muscle tone. It effects his writs, ankles, knees. I am assuming his eyes as well. Both eye Dr's told me that surgery would not be a permanent fix. He would keep on needing surgery as the muscle stretches out. We would only do surgery if there was no other option. An orthopedic surgeon recently told us the same thing about ds ankle issue. Surgery would be a temp bandaid.

Yes, without surgery. There are certain medicated eye drops that the with glasses can help straighten the eyes without surgery.

You need to see a neurologist asap

Did you try vision therapy? As a kid I would have terrible cross eyes and vision therapy was the cure. I believe there’s no rush for surgery.

I have 2 who were cross-eyed. One corrected with glasses and the other one needed surgery.

Being farsighted very much has to do with it. That's the primary cause of strabismus (crossed eyes) in children. Both of mine were farsighted. When my DD's eyes first started crossing, the eye doctor immediately said it was likely due to farsightedness. Later she had a thorough eye exam and that was proven correct.

My dd has febrile seizures. I noticed something was off with her eyes after a seizure. The doctor says that the seizure didn't cause the cross eye. I'm not sure though.

I am in Israel. Does anyone know of a good doctor.
I was told that she is too young for vision therapy. She won't be able to do the exercises.

Professor Shpirer in Ramat Gan is supposed to be #1.

We used Moshe Snir in Givatayim and he was great.

My son was diagnosed with strabismus at age 3. We've been treating it with glasses and patching so far (he's 6 now) and the eye doctor says he doesn't need surgery. He has a mild case though.

We went to Professor Shpirrer. He was the one that said she needs surgery. I just really don't want surgery.

Seizures can definitely affect vision. Not in the eye but from the brain. Please see a neuroopthamologist or neurooptometrist!!

Prism glasses helped my child who could not participate in vision therapy. I was told that they target the same goal a different way

Have you gone to Ariel lifshitz miller on Kanfei neshorim?

DD has had glasses for far sighted since the age of 2, she said we have to be really strict with her wearing her glasses otherwise she will go cross eyed.
Unless the prescription is incorrect it shouldn't cause crosseye.
