A couple of months ago I got a call from my bank saying that they noticed suspicious charges on my (TD) bank card and they just want to verify that it was me. They were expensive purchases out of state and they weren't made by me. I obviously denied those purchases and was thankful they notified me. They then asked me for some account info and I was hesitant to give it so I said I'll put down and call back my bank directly. I did just that and when I mentioned the suspicious purchases they said they have no record of any of that and that call must've been a scam. Being concerned that my info was already hacked I asked them to stop my card and send me a new one which they did. It was a bit of a pain to wait for the new card and update my new card info on various (secure) websites and auto-pay services I use.
This story repeated itself a few times and I denied the purchases every time and when they asked for info I told them "sorry I'm not giving you any info. You called me. Why do you need my info?" At that point the caller usually hung up. I didn't bother stopping my card anymore.
Today when I saw my bank's number on my I.D. again (Yes the real number comes up on the ID so that makes the call seem legit) I decided to give them a taste of their own medicine!
Caller: Hi my name is Achmad from Pakistan (name and location changed) calling with TD bank customer service, can I please speak to Awesome Cardholder?
Me: Speaking! How can I help you?
Caller: how are you ma'am?
Me: How can I help you?
Caller : We're calling to verify some activity on your card and we want to make sure that you were the one who made the recent purchases.
Me: OK...
Caller: So I see here a purchase for some mega model iPhone for $1,298 made in the state of Yehupitz. Did you make that purchase?
Me: Yup! That was me.
Caller: Did you say it wasn't you?
Me: I said it WAS me. I made that purchase. Thank you for checking. Anything else I can do for you today?
Caller: click!
He must've never been this tongue tied in his life.
Now that was fun. But I'm concerned that they do the same to lots of other people. Being that it's the correct number on the ID I'm sure they manage to scam some people. Otherwise they wouldn't continue doing it for so many months. But at least for one tiny second I tasted the sweetest taste of revenge.
Anyone else get these calls from TD bank? Any clue how to stop it?

Omg that was hysterical! Good for you for recognizing that it’s a scam. Hopefully now they will stop calling you because you've played them.
Maybe ask your phone company if they can block this number but not the actual bank?

It's called call spoofing. There isn't a way to block them without blocking the bank as they use the banks number.
It's very important if any company calls you for information to call them back (not to the number they give you) even if it's the correct caller id

Same bank? I wonder if there's anything the bank can do about it. How is it so easy to get the bank's number to show up on the Caller ID? It's really bad because I'm sure some naive people out there fall for it.

I had it with chase bank a while ago. With all my genius I was a step away from giving them info.
Thank Hashem I told them I’ll go to my local branch to take care of whatever the issue was because I wasn’t fully comfortable with the info they asked for.
I never thought I’d fall for a scam. It was humbling indeed.

I had this once where a guy called and started telling me how a virus was detected on my computer. I played dumb and pretended he was calling from the doctor's office, and started telling him about my aches and pains, could they be viral....and yeah, the guy hung up pretty quickly.....

That was an hysterical read! Good for you OP that you didn't fall for their scam.
Scams like this seem to multiply by the day.

If I had time and patience I’ve played along and answered questions… made myself like an old person kept asking them to repeat … not always understanding what they want from me. Point is to keep them on phone so they can’t call someone else in that time

I had someone call and say there there was a virus on my computer and they will take over and fix it.
I played dumb and pretented that I didn't know anything about computes and they were telling me what to do. At one point he asked what I see on the screen (I was on a desk top) and I said nothing because the monitor wasn't on because he didn't tell me to open it.
He got so mad that I wasted his time that he threatened me that I will pay for it. Then slammed the phone down.

This really made me laugh. It's such a good feeling to give them a taste of their own medicine. I'm getting great ideas how to handle their next phone call.

Haha good one op.
I also thought I could never fall for a scam until I almost did. Bh Hashem gave me seichel in the end.
I saw a purchase on my Walmart account that I didn’t recognize (turns out I had made the purchase a while ago but it only showed up recently for some reason)
Anyway I decided to call Walmart and ask them about it so I googled Walmarts phone number and clicked the first link to Walmart that popped up. Turns out it was a scam website! Crazy how they can do that on google. They answered the phone “hello Walmart customer service” so I didn’t notice anything weird but I should have because usually when you call Walmart someone doesn’t pick up right away, there is a recording first.
So I told them my problem and gave them my email associated with my Walmart account and they said “we can see someone hacked into your Walmart account from Texas and is making purchases” I was shocked. I asked them what I should do and they said they can remove the hacker they just need me to first go to AppStore and download an app (I forgot the name of the app, a legit app) that gives them access to my phone. Basically if I would have done it they would have full access to my phone.
So that’s when I started to feel funny about this and didn’t like the sound of someone being able to access my phone remotely. So I told them I need to ask my husband first and they laughed and said you have nothing to worry about. I hung up and then looked at the link I had clicked on Google with Walmarts phone number and see that it wasn’t Walmarts website at all! But a pretty good copy of it. And that’s how I was almost scammed 🙈🤦♀️

I was told that the best thing to do with these scammers is just hang up. Don't say anything to them as soon as you realize it is a scam. Sometimes all they want is to get a voice sample, and then they will use ai software to generate your voice for a much more elaborate scheme.
