Faith in the Darkness (Poem)

Only Hashem runs the world.

It’s something I have known for long
It’s something I still know, still try
I can honestly say I know it’s a fact
Though my eyes cast it as a lie

I struggle to see what I know deep within
To be the essence of truth and of all
My faith is still firm but I cannot make sense
As the dominos cast shadows, then fall

It’s the core of my worldview, one hundred percent
And what I know is yet hard to feel
This world is a cloud, a fog of confusion
Obscuring my view of what’s real

Hashem runs the world, I repeat to myself
Day after day, night darkest night
Hashem runs the world, I know deep within
In the end things will be set right

And now in the middle, the muddle of life
The darkness of winter, of evil ascendent
There’s nothing to do but trudge down cold roads
When I see lit a Menorah resplendent

What’s a little light to do in an ocean of black
What’s a short candle in nights stretching long
What’s the power of faith, of strength deep within
The magnificent chords of a song

Small lights guide my journey as I keep going
Through this world so dark and confusing
I keep fighting my battles, onward march
I try so hard, but yet I’m losing

Those tiny little lights, shining for a brief hour
Through every generation, they hold eternal power
And my little actions, in the quicksand of my day
Forever will they shine in a most brilliant way
