Based on what?

Once something is published in the news, hilchos lashon hara changes. Public information or acts and statements made in public have a different status.

I'm NOT saying that it's open season to start making intrusive, nasty, or mean personal comments.

But that's not what happened here.

A few posters wondered if they had perhaps missed something with her husband...a divorce, an explanation, something...that would make sense why he's not mentioned.

She wrote this story to inspire and entertain (presumably) and from this thread it's obvious that we're all invested and admire her strength tremendously.

The curiosity stems from investment and is not malicious.

No comments here sounded malicious to me.

If someone is putting there story out there like this, non- anonymously presumably there's some thick skin.

The people rushing to "defend" should maybe take a chill.

'Laws of loshon horah change when something's in the news'? The new testiment, maybe, not in the torah I keep!

Have you leaned hilchos lashon hara? Yes, when something is public knowledge and has been reported publicly the halacha is different.

If you read the entire post and not just the line you wanted to be snarky about, the point was that you don't publish your personal life story with your name and all your hardships put out there in public then scream "lashon hara" when someone asks a basic question about a character who seems to have disappeared.

Very sporadically they are mentioned as "simi's siblings" I found that an interesting way of mentioning her other kids. But the main focus is on Simi. I wonder how they feared during this ordeal.

Yes. She has a few other kids. She mentions Simi because she was born very sick and was very sick now too.

I don’t feel like this thread is in good taste since it’s talking about real people who had a lot of courage to have their life’s story published.
Recently I heard the author being interviewed and she mentioned that she was a classmate/friend of the main character in the story.
She said that everything is true- completely.
I think that we have to believe that since the story is true and talking about real people we have to accept that certain things are too personal to delve into.
I don’t know any details about this story. I don’t know the people as I’m not from that community.
I did meet the author at a weekend event once and all I can say is that she is the most authentic person out there. She has a way with words so that you can actually ‘feel’ what she writes and she’s careful to protect people’s dignity when it’s a true story. She writes for a few different publications and can be trusted when she says it’s a true story.
Obviously certain things cannot/should not be written so I think we should just enjoy all that is printable.
I’m sure someone from the family was notified about this thread and I would think that the last thing you want to do is to make them regret that they agreed to have their story written up in a publication that so many people read.
Either all your questions will fall into place at the end or you weren’t meant to know.
Since someone on this thread was excited to say that she knows the family so she already let us know that simi didn’t survive (I wish I didn’t know that yet!) I think it’s probably obvious that simis husband must have remarried as he must have been young. He was not a main character in the story. Important, yes, but we don’t have to know everything about him. He obviously had a life before he married simi and afterwards too but the story isn’t focusing on him so it’s okay to let the story continue.
I think those that keep asking about him are really just being nosy.
I’m sure there will be reference to him later on at some point.
It’s really not nice to talk about real people and try to figure everything out.
You don’t have to know what wasn’t written.
I give a lot of credit to the author for doing a good job with her writing as obviously some personal things are very delicate.

Well obviously this is a story of challenges! Simis life was a challenge so it discusses her a lot.
Imagine the pain of a mother losing her child???

Ask your LOR if one may ask questions involving loshon horah, and discuss in a derogatory manner someone who's published their life's story. And post the answer on here please.

I'm curious about the title. Why did the author choose this title?

Her mother couldn’t be a mother to her, so that’s why I opened this thread to clarify.
