I’m due soon and can’t decide if I should try swaddling. I see babies in swaddles and they look so peaceful, otoh it really looks restrictive and I wouldn’t want to not be able to move… plus I want to make sure I do everything right to prevent issues later on with reflexes etc…
Anyone can help a mama decide?

Babies like being swaddled. It makes them feel secure. It's not restrictive. Babies do not know they have hands when they are first born. They do not know how to do anything with their hands. When they are not swaddled, they startle more and don't sleep as well.

Newborns need to be swaddled or they don’t sleep well. After 2-3 months the baby will let you know if it’s too restrictive. Don’t overthink this! Enjoy your baby 😘

You don’t have to decide now. Once you have your baby, you can try swaddling them and see if they like it. My babies only liked hands out, and only for about 2-3 weeks. I stopped when I saw they are not happy in the swaddle. Work with your baby.

I had some babies that loved it, some that hated it. Had no impact on reflexes or development, swaddling was only for sleeping the rest of the day they were able to move. The problem I did have with it was that there was a major sleep regression when they started rolling over and had to stop being swaddled.

Most babies sleep better swaddled because they have a startle reflex as newborns. This goes away within a few months and it is generally not a difficult transition to stop swaddling.

Think of a baby in tbe womb. They ate literally being swaddled. They can hardly move if at all.
Mot babies like being swaddled for at least a few months.
But its not something you can reallydecide on until you try it out in real time.

My swaddled babies compared to my non swaddled ones, slept through the night at young ages, ate beautifully, were so well rested and always happy, reached milestones early… I have only positive to say. But most of all a baby that sleeps well grows beautifully and has a calm mother. Can’t see a single negative. Plan on doing it again.

I moved to sleep sacks and they continued sleeping beautifully.

Watching babies swaddled and not you immediately see the difference. They Startle themselves. Can’t settle. When you swaddle a baby you feel their body just relax.
Whenever I was lazy or too tired and couldn’t be bothered to swaddle my babies before putting them to sleep they always had a shorter more disturbed sleep then when they were swaddled.

Did you use it? I’ve had my eye on it and wondering if it’ll actually have that swaddle effect on baby?

This isn't true. Their hands and feet are free to move, babies in utero can suck their thumb. It's more like a sleep sack maybe.
The Moro reflex goes away through practice so yes they'll startle themselves and wake. Then they'll integrate that reflex faster.
@ontrackbaby has highlights on swaddling and maybe @handsonapproaches too

Best swaddle ever!
It lets their hands be up which is what a lot of babies hate about regular swaddling, it’s really cozy and feels like a hug but isn’t super restrictive. Can’t recommend enough

This is the best one. Not restrictive and can use it at older stages.
