Don't "invest" in a whole life insurance policy. Rather take that five thousand a year and put it into the S&P 500. That way by now it would be worth at least the same but adjusted for inflation, instead of the equivalent of putting it under my mattress.

Max out IRAs when young
Invest in mutual funds
Go on vacation before having kids
Work as many hours as possible or finish education as young as possible before kids

Have the difficult discussions around money... deal with the emotions and ask for help!! I wish we had tackled this earlier in our marriage.
