Its very very different from Ner. Basically because of hte boys who end up going to each.
Boys going to Ner are more serious, more into their learning in general. Most of the boys staying in TA for high school are less serious about their learning and quite a proportion of them are struggling in some way. Yiddishkeit wise I mean. A number of them will eventually end up in Waterbury or similar places. THe REbbeim at TA are really amazing and work really hard to try to reach the boys, and yes some amazing boys come out of there. But it really is very very differnt to Ner.
Ner is a mechina l'yeshiva. TA really is more of a community high school.
From nursery through 8th grade at TA is very differnt to the high school. still the same great school wtih great rebbeim, but the boys who stay for high school is what makes it different.
Until high shcool there is a wider mix of boys in the school from a wider mix of families. for high school its mostly only more modern guys who stay, no yeshivsih boys etc.

So the fact that Mekor Chaim (?) opened up a few years ago didn't change the demographics at all? Just curious (would never compare to Ner, just wondering if it's any different than it was 10 years ago)

Not really. Only a handful of boys go from TA to Mekor Chaim usually. I believe the majority of MC's boys come from Ohr chadash

To clarify, if a boy is in TA high school it doesnt mean he's going off the derech chas vshalom! But it usually means that his main interest in life currently, is not gemara. And a lot of them talk to girls which is not the case in ner yisroel. By the end of 4years at TA high school a lot of boys are doing great, going to yeshivas in isreael, like Toras chaim, mercaz, ToMo, Bais. Also going to OJ, TJ, Fishers, Aish. Not bashing TA at all, just its MOSTLY a different type of guy going there than to Ner yisroel .

My son is in 12th grade in Ner. I thought the grades were bigger, like closer to 75 boys?
My son had a late faher, like close to Purim. Boys got acceptances before he even had his faher. But he had his faher on a Thursday and Sunday afternoon we got the acceptance email.

So you mentioned the wait to find out if accepted. I think ...and maybe others can chime in.. But I think you can have your son's Rebbe call and get a feel for if he will be accepted after the faher. And of course also say nice things about you son.

Correct, but the boys who go to OC and then MC somewhat used to be in the pool of TA boys. It helped TA elementary move a bit more to the right, so I was wondering if that didn't also help the high school age.

I also have an 8th grader and I am also worried.
As was stated above, KT is definitely being more picky now. I don't know where the "average" boys are supposed to go. (aside from out of town).
We are still in the process of figuring out where to apply but I have lots of anxiety about it.

What are good OOT options for these types of boys? My understanding is that those are hard to find also. The system has to change.

I don't think most out of town yeshivos, other than the ones with a reputation for taking "metzuyanim", rule out average learners. If the boy has a cheshek to be in a yeshiva, can act within the expectations of the school, his level of learning is a secondary factor.

For all those who say KT only takes the best, you don't have the facts 100%. I have a current 9th grader (and had other son there prior years--so I can vouch for changes over the years 1st person, not through rumors.) Yes they have become more picky with who they take, but I know for a fact there are B kids there who are hard working and amazing midos in the current 9th grade.
Last years' 8th grade (current 9th grade) had about the same number of kids as you are saying in the current 8th grade. They may not have landed up in 1st choice, but all the kids found a place.
It's a stress when there are x amount of spots and way more kids than spots. Yes out of town is not always the 1st choice option, but sometimes necessary.
I know a good few solid kids in this years TA 9th grade class from solid regular frum homes. Neither the parents nor the kids are modern. Some landed there because they went there through 8th and didn't get into their other choices. Some chose to go there even though they had other options. My understanding is that things are shaping up under R' Lefkowitz.
Fahers start Chanukah time and most kids will have answers purim/pesach time. It's a tough wait for the kids (and parents).

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but there is a new mesivta opening this year. Rabbi Shuchatowitz's son is starting one. I think it's going to be at Rabbi Taub's shul. They hope to eventually be similar to Rav Shlanger. Hopefully some nice boys will go there.
I also think Shaarei Chaim has all the ingredients to be a great place; it just hasn't gotten enough enrollment. I hope that a bunch of nice boys will go there too.

AFAIK Shaarei Chaim and Toras Chayim (hope I'm getting the names right- so many Baltimore yeshiva's have similar names) cater to middle of the road, average good boys.
People seem upset that Ner, Keser Torah and Slangers have upped their learning levels and are calling them elitists (I beg to differ but the academic boys need a place too and putting your son in a yeshiva where he will struggle academically can't be good for his learning and attitude toward yiddishkeit) leaving no choice but to send out of Baltimore. Why not consider these places which seem to be what you are looking for? I have nothing to do with the 2 yeshiva's but have heard about "good, average" boys going there rather than out of town and being matzliach
