We recently moved, and I need to get shades for the living room and dining room windows but I have no idea what's in style these days, and could use some guidance please. (Also with curtains)

Thanks for your help.

I heard that plain old sheers for curtains and roll down shades. The roll downs should not be zebra or fabric. Specifically a variation of plastic so they wipe easily.
Was also told that the roll downs should be hidden within a cut or niche or boxed in neatly and discreetly.

Here you have what a designer recently shared but please be a muse and shop whatever makes you happy, not what others tell you is in style.

I just did shades for my house. Roller shades are what’s in - in textured simple fabric. I did a lightly textured linen look one for most of my house and for the kitchen area a solar shade, similar look but a lot more washable. Blackout for upstairs. Curtains sheers are in - you can do something with texture or without (cream light colors). For the roller shades - valences (the box covering the roller at the top) are very not current and make it look dated. Some ppl still like it bc they feel like it finishes it off but in terms of what’s in style it’s just the roller by itself.

If you aren’t getting the valance at the top, and you have vinyl backed, it doesn’t look so nice…
also, make sure you know the difference between light filtering, room darkening, and blackout.
and also, how it looks from OUTSIDE your house

You seem to really know what you're talking about. Can you please do me a huge favor and add a link with an example of with/ without valance, and vinyl backed? I'm pretty clueless and would really appreciate your help!
