Personally, I think this story is a valuable PSA about the dangers of reading books. I mean, it starts with Civil War history, but before you know it you're reading Harry Potter and The Hobbit too. I mean, what's next, The Silmarillion? |
Lol!!!

Love this serial! It raises so many important conversations about parenting the marrieds, Shana rishona struggles and empty nest syndrome.

This is the second Mishpacha story I read recently that has a character scoff at the idea of eating roast chicken and potatoes on Shabbos. Can someone explain it to me? Are today's youth opposed to chicken and potatoes?

It's definitely not as common anymore. I feel like chicken on the bone and potatoes is when I need to make something easy but meaty for shabbos. If I'm actually trying it's a proper Brisket, steak, etc.

This serial was made for a reason, it's unfortunately very realistic for a lot of young couples nowadays..

Yonah is not innocent either.
He's not playing the kollel part that he was expected to play.

Agree, but the editing is horrible. At least online, where I'm reading it as I live way oot and Mishpacha isn't sold here. Is it Wagshall, Wagshal, or Wagschal? - all 3 spellings are used. "Companiable" instead of companionable. And other things that I can't think of this second. I hope it's better in the printed magazine!

Google "Mishpacha picture this chapter 1". It's easier to Google each chapter than to search for it through Mishpacha's website. You have to have a (free) account with them to read the full chapters.

You can read it online I love mishpacha for posting their articles online!
I think the best way of finding chapters is by looking through the writer’s articles. Here’s a link to page 6 which is where the first chapter is - https://mishpacha.com/contribu.....ge/6/
Once you finish with the chapters on page 6, go to page 5, then 4 etc.

The odds of an OOTner whose sister is the same age as his mother in law marrying someone like estee seems really unlikely which makes me roll my eyes as the story goes on each week. |
I have news for you. There are OOT boys who consider in-town girls to be a maaleh. We were told this when researching OOT boys who said yes to my in-town DD - some of them davka want in-town, they think they are more "with it" or "cool" and it's what they want. They may also prefer the Lakewood life with one set of parents close by for Shabbosim, etc....

I didn't say it never happens I said its not common. If your a 19 year old girl marrying a 21 year old boy and your both pretty immature your more likely to end up with someone from the same city, live near both parents, still expect your parents to really be involved in your daily life. Its an easier adjustment when you have a lot in common. Its not true for every single person but I think its true for enough to make this story feel unrealistic.

And yet you see it everywhere - boy from Lakewood marries girl from Chicago. Boy from Chicago marries girl from Brooklyn. Boy from Detroit marries girl from Brooklyn. Boy from Monsey marries girl from Chicago. Girl from Lakewood marries boy from LA. Boy from Lakewood marries girl from Cleveland....
Yes, real examples - these are couples I know off the bat.....
(but my DD did not like the boy from Baltimore, though he liked her and was interested in an in-town girl....she married a boy from Flatbush).

Your examples aren't wrong but they don't take age and maturity into account. The characters in the story are both very young and very immature. So in that scenario I stand by my opinon.

And this is when I wonder..... Are we a struggling poor nation barely affording tuition? Or are we a wealthy nation that eats steaks weekly, buys designer clothes, and has exotic vacations??
I can't even fathom having brisket weekly. No judgement towards u at all. Yes judgement if this is becoming a new norm to the extent it's mentioned in serials...
Sorry I know this was very off tangent...

Here her and her family are supporting Yona financially and he can't keep seder. He barely wakes up on time and takes frequent coffee breaks during first seder and hardly ever makes it to second seder. Also, he springs on her that he wants her to have a family bbq when his parents are coming to town. He doesn't offer to make anything and gets upset at HER for asking her mother for help with the potato salad. And finally, while they are still Shana rishona and she's feeling awful and so nauseous and not so comfortable with his mother yet, she very clearly articulates that she needs him to stay back from bowling. And what does Yona do? goes bowling anyway and doesn't check his phone to see how his nauseous wife is feeling. Yona does not sound like a good guy to me. |
This! I think Yonas acting far worse then Esti here. Esti is having a very difficult pregnancy, sounds like possibly even HG, terrible nausea, vomiting, weakness... In her case I would never agree to travel by car for hours to my in laws feeling so sick, and would be furious to be left feeling sick and miserable in an uncomfortable unfamiliar surrounding so he could have fun with friends, especially after she specifically told him she doesn't want him to. Big boo boo on his part.

The boy goes to yeshiva, which is likely in-town, he then sees a Shadchan who suggests a girl from Lakewood, and that's all there is to it. Plenty of such shidduchim. If he was friendly with Lakewood families, went to them for Shabbosim, etc...it becomes even more likely.

I think most of you are missing the point. No one is saying that boys from OOT don't marry Lakewood girls.
My point is that it doesn't make sense that a family like the one Yonah was raised in would end up with a DIL like Esti. that's all.
She comes across as immature, spoiled, and entitled. Like mha3484, it just makes the story seem less realistic.
