I got a phone call today from a 646 area code (which, not coincidentally, is my area code.)
When I answered, there was a voice crying hysterically, "Help me, someone help me!"
Then a man with an accented voice got on the line and said, "There's been an very bad accident. The person gave me your number to contact. Do you recognize this voice?"
My heart dropped, and my hands started to shake, a wave of panic gripped me.
"This is a sensitive situation, what is your daughter's name?"
I was so shocked that I didn't answer for a moment and just listened for a minute. I noticed that there was no noise in the background - no ambulance sirens, no people screaming. And then I realized he was asking for my daughter's name - but my young daughters were in the car with me.
"We need her name so we can help her - what is your daughter's name?" the man asked again.
At that point, I stayed quiet for a while, and the man hung up.
I'm guessing that if I would have answered, the man would have asked for date of birth and other identifying info in order to "help" the victim, and commit identity theft.
It was a really bad scare, and I've been feeling a bit traumatized the rest of the day.
Wondering if anyone ever had a similar experience.

It’s a very famous scam. Many have fallen for it and lost lots of money.

Very famous and scary. Someone called my grandfather in middle the night that his teen grandson was arrested (they even had a name) they wanted money asap but he couldn’t leave my grandmother he said to call back in the morning. In the morning he asked my aunt were her son is she said sees him sleeping in his bed!

It's scary to think what would happen if c"v there really was an emergency and a family member really needed help.

It was likely a spoofed number.

There’s actually a movie coming out about this. Old woman gets scammed out of a lot of money and then goes on a journey to get it back. I think it’s going to be called Thelma.

My grandparents got this call (no name was given for the grandson but my grandparents kind of guessed which grandson they thought it might be and didn’t suspect anything) and they transferred over a couple thousand dollars…
