My teenage son is generally a regular kid in a nice, small mestiva (he's a smart kid b'H and the school is not a high pressure place). In the past few month, I noticed bad tendencies; like he davens really long because he's repeating words and making sure he has all the right kavanos, and it takes him many minutes and gallons of water to wash his hands negal vasser because he has to make sure to get every spot. He's not obsessive about germs or other things, mainly just these 2. I'm not running to a therapist for him because I don't think he will go and I'm not sure it warrants one yet. BH our house is a happy place and I do not know of any other issues that would trigger such behavior changes - it's been kind of gradual. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this and can recommend techniques I can provide to help him. TYIA!

This is religious OCD and he needs professional help before it gets out of hand.
I have relatives with it and I work as a secretary in an office that specialises in OCD.
Please get him help now or speak to a professional before it gets to ingrained and before it causes havoc. I speak to the wives of people with it and it can ruin marriages!!!!!

If you live in the US please reach out to Relief for a referral.

It’s probably deeper than what you see, and generally it gets out of control and gets worse. People have gotten divorced over it. It’s worth tackling it now and getting him help before it’s too late.

It’s called scrupulosity a form of religious ocd

At the very least you should consult with a therapist who specializes in ocd and take it from there

Generally yes, except the excessive washing hands is something my husband doesn't do, and makes me think it's more severe.

The hand washing is part of the religious ocd just like the davening. He’s scared he didn’t get all of his hand washed properly for negel vasser.
OP my husband’s religious OCD almost destroyed both of our lives. I don’t think it should be taken lightly.
My advice is to go one step at a time. Go see your pediatrician and get a referral for a psychiatrist and /or psychologist. Start with a consultation. You can still help your son!

DH has OCD including religious type. His parents had no clue until he was 19 when it got much more serious, but he suffered silently for many years. Your son may be suffering more than you realize. Especially if he sometimes seems to space out or not be able to pay attention so well.

OCD looks different in each person. You can’t see it’s more or less because they are both different people.

Please rule out strep and Lyme. Meanwhile you can try inositol twice a day, and maybe omega 3, it can really help.
