In Lakewood, holding back is common especially for boys. Often even Sept stay back, sometimes even August.
As a parent who pushed on child ahead and repeated my next with an fall birthday it was the best gift I ever gave her
Another consideration for boys is aside for readiness now, staying ahead means having to get up for minyan bus a year younger and starting gemara a year younger. Both milestones where the extra age makes a difference

I know one person who regretted it. She held back all her boys so they would be the oldest.
Her youngest son did not belong in his grade. He is bored and disruptive. He is smart and way ahead of his piers socially and educationally. The rebbes didn’t appreciate it. This was a few years ago and he always plays with the older kids. She has regrets and said he would have done better had she not held back.
Also kids who are bigger or hit puberty earlier sometimes stick out snd are much more uncomfortable about their appearance.
