I'm confused - price of chocolate chips is much higher than chocolate bar that I can chop up for recipes. Does anyone use chocolate bars instead of chocolate chips to save money?

Aside from having to chop up any downside?

Of course you can. I know people who do that all of the time.

Chocolate chips are made to hold their shape, the chopped bar might melt and not stay as chunks.
Also curious what bar you’re finding that’s cheaper than chocolate chips. In my stores it’s more expensive that way and more work.

The original chocolate chip cookie was made by chopping up a chocolate bar.

*Thank you* for posting what I was thinking!! Flower
I believe we call could benefit from a bit of thinking and inquiring our grandparents "How did you do it without item XYZ? Example: regular cling film for kitchen use. What did they do? Maybe covered with a plate. There were no silicon baking mats with marked circles for the macaroons you want to bake. Solution: do circles with a pen on baking paper.
You dont need to stop using convenient things but having some grasp of possible alternatives is always a good thing.

I just did it for the recipe
Have always done it
I am not dropping everything to run out and buy chips.

I do this for Pesach because the KFP chips are gross and the chocolate bars are so much better quality. The cookies come out just fine.

TY everyone. I know that prices vary but are chocolate baking bars *typically* cheaper than chips? I would assume so.

I think chocolate bars are yummy on cookies . Sometimes we put in chocolate chips and pieces of chocolate, and those are absolutely the best cookies! And sometimes sometimes just Chocolate Because sometimes I can’t even even find chocolate chips.

Chocolate bars are smaller. A little more than a 1/3 smaller.

Choc chips are around $2.50-3.50 for 9 oz bag

A chocolate bar is 3.5 oz. Almost a 1/3 of the size. A cheap chocolate bar is maybe 1.50. The better bars are 2.50 and up. I don’t see how using a chocolate bar saves money. Unless you buy cheap baking chocolate. But it’s not so yummy to eat in cookies. And even then 10 oz baking chocolate is at least $4.

You can 100% use choc bar in cookies. In fact I like choc chunks better. But I’m not sure you are saving any money.

Baking bars are cheaper

I use a regular dark chocolate bar in a pinch and it’s more expensive.

When I moved to Israel in 1980 there were no chocolate chips here (among other things like broccoli, celery stalks, fresh mushrooms, normal breakfast cereal etc.) so we chopped up chocolate bars.
I'll never forget the excitement when the Oppenheimer c. chips first hit the supermarkets sometime in the mid-eighties IIRC.
That said, I still cut up chocolate sometimes if I want higher quality pieces or chunks instead of chips for baking.

If you use baking bars as chocolate chips make sure you buy semi sweet or bittersweet depending on your preference or the cookies will be awful. Regular baking bars that do not say semi or bittersweet are not meant to be eaten on their own and taste terrible that way.
That aside, I find chocolate chips (Jewish brands) to be both cost and time effective. For a gourmet cookie, chopped up chocolate with nice chunks is definitely the way to go. Basically you’re fine either way.
