I would like to bring DS from Israel to NY for Pesach. I keep hearing that Israir is trying to make a lower cost alternative to Elal. Is this actually likely to happen or should I go ahead and buy a $2000 elal ticket before they sell out and become $5000?

We don't have many neviot on this group, so it's hard to give an accurate prediction.
I'd still say that ElAl is going to be more reliable. It's going to take Israir a while to get set up for long haul flights, and even then, they won't have the security features that ElAl has built in.
If you want to save money, get him a flightpath a stopover in Europe.

I had the same question (not Israir specifically) for my travel agent. I asked if I should wait for other airlines to start flying. He said he doesn't trust them to be consistent at this time.
I bought my son's pesach ticket on Elal about a month ago. I was quoted about $1800 to fly directly to the USA (round trip). As I don't live near Boston, NY or NJ, I'd have to either drive or book a connecting flight. Instead we did via England. Elal has an agreement with VirginAtlantic and it was closer to $1400 round trip with the stop over. (Elal to England, VirginAtlantic to US) Since they have an agreement, if one of them change the flight the other will accommodate.

Book El Al now and check cancellation/change policy in detail.
Better safe than sorry.

Since covid, I haven't recouped my savings enough to fly elal. But we're going to stretch this time because DS is away for such a long time.
