I have service for 16 but by now it's more like service for 12. They were s gift when we got married 20 years ago, I don't love them and I don't know where to buy more, it's not a classic company.
If it's just my immediate family we have enough but after that it's plastic. The cost of replacing it all is just daunting and so I just don't.

The costs of disposables is for far more daunting than real dishes!
Do your math. You will be able to buy even quite exclusive dishes for that money:)
I buy extremely little disposables. Still I find it such a schlep to bring it home (bulky and heavy) and it fills my garbage can quickly.

Count up how much you're spending/throwing away on plastics. Try to put the same amount aside each time you buy new plastics, and it won't take too long to have most of the money for a new set.

I always say for that money she will be able to buy Rosenthal. Easily.

Side note: The only item I have a tiny problem is the soup tureen. I have one for Pesach use only.
Why did the Halacha decide I can't bring my soup pot to into the Succa? Mad I wonder if the manufacturers of soup tureens somehow need more business and therefore used bribes. (Joke)
Also they don't come cheap.

what about the cost of hot water to wash them?

some say disposables are cheaper than washing dishes with hot water.

Controversial opinion but I NEVER wash with hot water. Not on weekdays and not on Shabbos. Sometimes warm, but you don’t need hot water to wash dishes well unless they have some sort of stuck on grease or congealed fats.

I don't know what it costs where you are, but in Israel, most of the year our hot water comes from the sun, with no additional charge.

Warm water is normally sufficient to wash dishes, unless they have hard fat, so even if you are paying to heat the water, it doesn't have to be so expensive.

Someone else suggested putting a bowl of water on the blech to be warm for washing dishes Friday night. That doesn't cost anything extra.

I have a hard time to believe it. If you wish with the hot water tap running it becomes pricey. That's not a smart way to wash dishes.

Family of 5 kh, I have a service of 16.
When we host more than a couple of guests, I serve in plastic.

I found that the quickest and most efficient way of washing dishes is to soak the dishes in warm water, then wash each one with dish detergent, put them on the counter in piles, and then rinse them one at a time. Cutlery is rinsed several pieces at a time. I try to get each piece in and out of my hands as quickly as possible. With practice I can now wash a huge pile of dishes in less than 10 minutes. It took me years to develop this method. I also use a squeegee to move the water accumulated on the counter into the sink.
