I’m a BT and I went to seminary but that’s because I needed the basics and foundation to build a frum home. As an ffb what’s the point of seminary? Why spend so much money doing more schooling when that money could go towards learning a trade or working towards a career to help support their husband/family one day? I ask without judgement, I just don’t get why someone would want to have more school work after finally coming out of high school.

Good question. Seems we need to spend $50,000 to show our daughters how to live the kollel life on a budget.

Great question! As someone who went to a top name seminary and was an alef student, I don't know!!!

I still have no idea and that’s why I didn’t go. It felt like it would have been grade 13 and 12 was more than enough for me. I went straight to college and BH never regretted it

It's another societal pressure.
People fear they won't get a good shidduch
If they are out of the box and don't go to seminary.
I think it can be a beautiful experience but it is an exorbitant luxury.
If I had the power to ban seminary, I would. Very destructive to the parents.

Until the rabbis will come and ban it it will continue. Dd 1 went and suffered and was sick a lot couldn’t sleep because of the noise at night she had good time also but overall was awful. Dd 2 had an amazing time. She came back more frum and independent and mature. We are still paying payments and she couldn’t have stayed home when all her friends were there. It’s too much to bear. I think it’s a major parnasssa for the Americans in Israel and they pressure not to ban it….

I can only speak of my personal experience. I came from a poor, chinuch family that bordered on abusive and dysfunctional. I never went to camp. I hardly traveled or spent time away from my family. I went to seminary in Israel and it was probably the best year of my life. I finally got some independence. I spent time in the holy land I always learned about and dreamt about but never visited. I had some adventurous experiences that I will probably never do again. I got in my last licks of being immersed in an inspirational environment surrounded by thinkers and young women who were striving for growth. This was before I started college and began my career surrounded by non-jews which has lasted for the past 12 years. The way I look at it now is: You have the rest of your life to work. Why rush into it? Enjoy your youth. Get the most out of it that you can.
The money aspect is a whole different aspect that I didn't address.

You just asked the million dollar question.
I sent my kid and don’t regret it, as they got a full year of college credit-so it was either paying YU or Israel and Israel is cheaper, so it was an experience they had the luxury of enjoying. I myself did not go and I don’t regret not going.

It was a life changing year for me. I grew in every area. It was when I had time to think and figure out who I am and what I want to do with my life away from mommy’s apron stings. Also my only time to truly live in Israel and explore the land and learn so much.

I could have written this word for word. I don't know what will be 15 years from now but I already highly doubt I'll be sending any daughters to seminary.

It isn’t the knowledge per se. It is the combined experience of living with others, being independent, and spiritual growth. These are huge reasons. Hopefully, it all goes as hoped.
If credits are earned, then it really is a good investment.
Having said that, there are seminaries and there are seminaries. All of the above perks can be gained from a reasonably priced seminary. $50,000 a year is beyond.

When I was newly married living in EY my husband and I saw the seminary girls and felt it was a waste of money. (I went to seminary in NY.) Fast forward 18 yrs and we don't have the extra money but we are considering sending our daughter to Israel for seminary because she didn't have the best high school experience and she wants to learn and grow in yiddishkeit. She wants to go into the medical field and we hope that seminary will solidify her foundation so she knows who she is before she starts college.

Do you see the point of college? Many people felt that someone is ignorant and uneducated if they do not have a college degree.
When I went to seminary, 30+ years ago, it was touted as INSTEAD of college. It was supposed to be a higher, deeper level of learning. I do agree that it's a lot to go to college and seminary both.
